1938
JANUARY: The mortgage of $80,000 on the Mountaineer Mines
was purchased by Dr. Carl P. Jones who already had the entire
Champion Providence group under his. control.
The population of Nevada county as of the first of the new
year was given as 17,000. Total population of California on the
same date was estimated at 6,576,000,
FEBRUARY: The month was ushered in with a rainstorm
which doused the county with 11.61 inches bringing the season's
total to 32 inches,
The new $117,000 Nevada City Elementary School was dedicated by members of the local units‘of NSGW and NDGW and other
civic organizations.
MARCH: Heavy storms throughout February and March brought
the month-end total of rain to 70.90 inches for the season.
APRIL: The inauguration of a chapter of the famous E Clampus
of Democrats. Vitus in Nevada City saw 96 "Poor Blind Candidates" initiated
before a crowd of more than 100 members from many points
in Northern California and Nevada.
Resou rce Some 300 miners and businessmen of Grass Valley surged
through the streets of that community on the night of April 7;
clearing: out the CIO — Communists who had been stirring up
trouble in the mines of the area for many weeks. The culprits
were not "manhandled" according to reports at the time, but
were ordered to leave Nevada County. Later incidents reportedly involved severe beatings administered by miners to the
"outsiders."

Elizabeth L. George, Executive
Director of SEDD speak on the
subject of Economic Development Districts.
Miss George delivered an address to the convention. She told
the delegates that the needs of
the rural areas were real andof
major proportions. It became
apparent to the audience that
the capabilities of Economic Development Districts and Conservation Districts could and should
join in an effective team to serve
local rural needs. Miss George
explained how the Economic Development District is already
serving the needs of people in
Sierra, Nevada, Placer-and-E1
MAY: Mr. and Mrs, Eugene Tucker, and their two young daughters, departed by train from Colfax enroute O' Okeip Namaqualand

Mr. and Mrs. George Legg hosted a reunion of members
of the Nevada City High School class of 1888 ata gala party
in their Nevada Street home. The class numbered 20 members

of Nevada City; Mrs. Anette Dorsey (nee Nettie Breed) of
Berkeley; and Attorney and Mrs. Barnum Power (nee Minnie
Lester) of San Francisco, Others of the class had either moved
away or had died.
JUNE: A mountain lion which measured eight feet from tip to tip
and weighed 85 pounds was killed by aposse within half a mile of
the city limits of North Bloomfield.
JULY: Mr. and Mrs, Sam Trevethick of Main Street, Nevada
City, celebrated 50 years of married life at a pleasant party.
He was 79 and she 72. They were married in Nevada City on
July 1, 1888. Both were native of Nevada County.

member of the pioneer family which organized the Nevada County

OCTOBER: Some 30 deer were weighed in at Smart Bros,
store in North San Juan during the deer season which had just
ended. Walter Smart reported that the largest weighed 246
pounds, and had an 18 inch spread in its two points; the smallest
was also a two-pointer with an eight inch spread and weighed
145 pounds,
Lawrence Mazzanti and his dogs "treed'"_a brown bear
weighing more than 300 pounds. Larry killed the animal with a
.22 rifle near the Central Shaft of the Lava Cap Mine.
