Dams Stop Damage
The U.S, Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation
Service reports soil and water
conservation measures installed
ifi Nevada County Soil Conservation District functioned
satisfactorily during recent
storms,
Ray Borchard, Work Unit Conservationist in Grass Valley, said
heavy rains filled the soil beyond
water-holding capacity with
resultant heavy runoff, Normally, dry stream beds became
raging torrents in some areas,
Where properly installed conservation practices were in place,
erosion, sedimentation, and
water damage was minimized,
Borchard said,
Of the 250 farm ponds which
are built in this community,
nearly all filled with water and
spillways flowed, Borchard said,
The benefits of ground cover for
runoff and erosion’ control were
well demonstrated with cover
crops, stubble mulches, and
proper tillage, Most landowners
in Nevada County Soil Conservation District greatly benefited
from the rain where vegetation
left for the winter allowed water
to soak into the soil, or run off
slowly, Borchard said. In contrast, runoff and erosion did
occur on burned areas from last
summer's fires, cleaned tilled
areas, and overgrazed places,
Fund Raising Advisory Committee
and a member of the Board of
Directors of the California Heart
Association, will be General
Chairman for the event.
