NORTHERN MINES & CALIFORNIA REPORTS BSAA Ree HRI EHH et HET peek et + rE et Heart Disease Forum Is Scheduled For Grass Valley A public forum on heart disease will be presented to residents of the Grass Valley and Nevada City area on Wednesday, February 2, 1966. The program, to be held in the Hennessy School Auditorium in Grass Valley, will begin at 8:00 p.m. The program will feature a presentation by Dr, David E. Smith on advances in cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Smith is one of our area's nationally known heart surgeons and cardiovascular research investigators, Dr. Smith, an active member of the Board of Directors of the Sacramento-Yolo-Sierra Heart Association, will join Stanley Ogush, M. D., of Grass Valley, and C, Jackson Rayburn, M.D., Medical Administrator of the Nevada County Hospital; in a panel discussion following his presentation, Willard Rose, of Nevada City, who is Chairman of the SYSHA New Science Course Sierra College at Rocklin, Placer County, will offer a 4 unit science course this summer that will include 4-H members in their junior or senior year of high school, Ray Underhill, life science instructor, will accept four members from Central Region 4-H clubs in his class of 30, The four week summer field biology course is for non-science and science majors, Starting June 13, the program includes one week at the Woodchuck 4-H Camp in the Sierra Mountains, one week on the coast at Van Dam State Park, andtwoweeks of resident instruction on the Sierra College Campus. Total cost is $50.00 for food, lodging, and transportation. “T here is no better way for a student to complete science requirements or to enrich their field experience than to take part in the summer field program, " says Underhill, “Three courses are offered Botany 12, Zoology 12, and Biology 22, Credits are transferable to any. college or University, " 4-H'‘ers interested in enrolling for the course should write a brief letter describing their 4-H activities and future participation in the 4-H program, Send it with a school transcript,to Skip Bolton, Farm Advisor, 358 Elm Avenue, Auburn, California, Children Are Asked To Help Keep California Green California school children are again invited to participate in the Annual Keep California Green Forest Fire Preventton Poster Contest, This is the 12th year of competition, among students of all ages in the four established divisions, for top honors in the ~ Statewide contest. The purpose is to impress our young people with the high values of our wildland resources and to reduce the number of man-caused wildfires, . Most California Counties conduct local elimination contests andenter only the top local posters in the statewide event. Final judging will be right after the May 3, 1966 entry deadline
and awards will be given before the close of the school term. Phone 447 9743, Dams Stop Damage The U.S, Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service reports soil and water conservation measures installed ifi Nevada County Soil Conservation District functioned satisfactorily during recent storms, Ray Borchard, Work Unit Conservationist in Grass Valley, said heavy rains filled the soil beyond water-holding capacity with resultant heavy runoff, Normally, dry stream beds became raging torrents in some areas, Where properly installed conservation practices were in place, erosion, sedimentation, and water damage was minimized, Borchard said, Of the 250 farm ponds which are built in this community, nearly all filled with water and spillways flowed, Borchard said, The benefits of ground cover for runoff and erosion’ control were well demonstrated with cover crops, stubble mulches, and proper tillage, Most landowners in Nevada County Soil Conservation District greatly benefited from the rain where vegetation left for the winter allowed water to soak into the soil, or run off slowly, Borchard said. In contrast, runoff and erosion did occur on burned areas from last summer's fires, cleaned tilled areas, and overgrazed places, Fund Raising Advisory Committee and a member of the Board of Directors of the California Heart Association, will be General Chairman for the event. Gene Ragle, General Manager forRadio Station KAHI in Auburn, will moderate the panel discussion and the question and answer portion of the program, Sponsoring the event are the Heart Fund volunteers from Grass Valley andNevada City, and the local Rebekah and Oddfellow Lodges, 1.
