The Alaska Mine.
The Alaska mine at Pike City is in
a2 most prosperous condition. The expected tranefer of the property to new
owners has hampered the management
because of the tinlooked for delays
connected with the transaction; but
now independent of any sale the necessary funds have been secured from
the East and the work of development
and equipment will be recommenced.
Twenty mor: stamps will be added to
the mill, making sixty in all: The
shaft will be sunk 250 feet deeper and
duplicate pumps of larger size than
the large ones now used will be put

{2 Hunting For a Mine.
es
Mr. Betts,a géntleman who came. to
Colfax from Ohio a month or so ago,has
since his arrival been industriously engaged with a divining apparatus in
hunting for a gold-bearing quartz
mine. He has found what he regards
as a favorable location and is having
a shaft sunk there. It is now down
twenty-four feet, and he says he will
go to a depth of 300 feet if-he does not
find what-he is after nearer the surface. If he discovers a good. mine, it
is his intention -to present it to a
young lady of his acquaintance to].
whom he has taken a fatherly liking.
Mr. Betts is an elderly gentleman and
is said to be possessed of sufficient
wealth to gratify his taste for speculation of adventure.
What Cash Wiil Do.

Encouraging Developments.
Alf. Tregidgo, manager of the Washington and Bluebell mines in Washington township, came down yesterday
week’s stay. The mills at both of the
mines, which had been temporarly.
shut down on account of the cold
weather, were started again yesterday
and are now crushing steadily. At
the Washington the work of exploitation has resulted in opening one of
the largest and best ore deposits ever
seen in that part of the county. The
mammoth ledge at the Bluebell also
continues to hold itsown. The capacity of both mines will be increased
next summer by the addition of more
stamps.

New Year Etiquette at the White House—
Political Jots.
Wasuinaton, Jan. 2nd, 1888.
Eprror-Transcript—Today are inaugurated in Washington the social
festivites of its official world. The
semi-official retirement in which the
cabinet circle was plunged through
respect to the memory of Ex-Secretary
Manning was of less than a week’s du«
ration, and therefore has not interfered
Year's Day.
As on former similar occasions, the
White House was fragrant with floral
decorations, dazzling with gas, and
brilliant with gold lace, epaulettes and
rich costumes. The New Year's Day
reception at the Executive Mansion
was instituted in the early days of the
Republic, and Washington himself,
after consultation with Adams, the
first Vice-President, established some
of the etiquette which still prevails. *
This ceremony, more than any other
in the United States, resembles what
is called a:‘Court. In the early days
the people rushed to a fublic reception
in such numbers that the representativesof foreign nations here complained
to attend. An arrangement -was then
made to receive the Diplomatic Corps
separately, and shortly after it was
deemed necessary to determine the
relative rank and precedence among
the foreign functionaries and our own
high officials of State. Washington
consulted his entire Cabinet and a system of-precedence was arranged which
became the foundation of all the official etiquette of the Capital.
While the order of approach to the
Presidential presence observed at one
of these receptions is well known to
many, I will mention for the benefit
of others who are curious to learn,
that the officers of the Cablnet and
their families are first received by the,
House, and then follows the Diplomatic Corps in the order of their seniority
or residence in. Washihgton, so that it
is possible the plenipotentiary from
St. Domingo may have precedence of
the Minister from the Court of St.
James. After the Diplomatists come
the Judges of the Supreme Court and
then the Senators and Representatives, officers of the Army and Navy,
and a number of Government-officials
too various in name to mention. ~
The parade in the East room today
was worthy of comparison for glitter
and lace with that of many real, courts.
The Diplomats are always in Court
dress, the Judges of the Supreme
Court sometimes wear their gowns,
and the Army and Navy officers always wear full uniform. After the
official crowd have passed out and
those who have contrived to accompany it to see the sights, of which
thefe are always a gvodly number,
the democracy is admitted, and hod. seen_under the chandeliers where the

Smatipox at Sierra City.
Sierra City advices of Monday say:
The nineteenth case of smallpox” was
discovered yesterday and the patient
was removed to the pesthouse. Saturday Postmaster Brennan received
notice that no mail would be received
at Sierra Valley from this place. This
closes all. outgoing mail communication from Sierra City. But one death
has occurred here, and it is doubtful
if that was caused by smallpox. All
the towns in the vicinity have quarantined against Sierra City, thus preveuting any infection leaving here. Many
false reports have been published -by
the outside press as to the situation of
affairs here which tend to do injustice
to this section.
