HOBART EARP, the cousin of the famous lawman Wyatt Earp, holds a matched
pair of Colt 45 caliber revolvers which were presented to him by a gun manufacturing firm. Earp was the world's champion fast-draw in 1962 and has presented
fast-draw exhibitions throughout the country. He is wearing a vest made by his
wife ann and appears in the Helldorado Days celebration in Tombstone, Arizona
each year. He has also appeared in numerous television shows and movies and
has entertained thousands of spectators in the convention center in Las Vegas
on behalf of the Sahara Hotel. :
Fastest gun in county
Less than 100 years ago Wyatt,
Virgil and Morgan Earp walked
down the main street of
Tombstone, Arizona to face an
outlaw gang in a shoot-out that
later became known as the
gunfight at the OK Corral.
Doc Holliday fought along side
the Earp brothers and cut one
bandit down with a blast from a
sawed-off shotgun. Virgil and
Morgan suffered minor wounds
and Wyatt left the scene with a
bullet hole through the tail of his
frock coat. All of the outlaws had
been killed with the exception of
one who left the country.
The history of western gun
battles and the exploits of the
Earp brothers in Arizona
fascinate Hobart Earp, a Penn
Valley resident and cousin of
Wyatt, Hobart: Earp’s great
great grandfather was.a brother
of Wyatt Earp’s father.
Always interested in the
history of his family, Hobart
‘also became interested in the
techniques the gunfighters used
in the old west. In 1952, while
working as the head flight
controller at the Ontario
International Airport in
Southern California, Hobart met
aman who at that time was the
fastest draw with a six-gun in
the country. The two men
‘practiced together on fast—
drawing with revolvers and
formed the first fast-draw club
in the country, ‘‘The Judge Colt
Fast Draw Club.”
Hobart became fast enough
with a gun to finish in the
nationals from 1961 to 1964. He
won the world’s championship in
Las Vegas in 1962 out of a field of
nearly 300 competitors.
In: the 1950s, however,
organizers of Helldorado Days
in Tombstone learned of Hobart
Earp’s fast-draw club and sent
him a letter asking him to take
part in western skits in the town
which recreated gun battles of
the past.
Hobart agreed and, in the mid1950’s,. traveled to Tombstone
where he played the part of his
famous relative Wyatt in 14
separate skits over a three day
period.
Hobart now travels to
Tombstone each October to take
part in the Helldorado Days
celebration.
Hobart also appeared in
movies and. portrayed a
marshall in El Dorado, a film
starring. John Wayne.
Presently Hobart is working
as’a gold and silversmith in his
home in Penn Valley where he
lives with his wife Ann, who he
met in Grass Valley in 1968.
A few weeks ago Hobart gave
a. fast-draw_ demonstration to
Nevada Union High School
students and, in the spring, he
‘gave a demonstration at the
Penn Valley Rodeo.
He pulls his Colt 45 caliber
revolvers out of his holsters in a
flash of speed that proves, even
though he has given up
competition, he is the fastest
gun in Nevada county.
