Suggested Names
For Pass Pour In
NEVADA CITY --Elisha
Stevens Pass would seem to
be the early favorite of Nevada County Nugget readers
as a suggested name for the
new trans-Sierra freeway
being completed north of
Donner Pass,
But more than a dozen
other proposed names for the
pass have been received to
date, and theNugget expects additional suggestions
to be coming in during the
next two weeks, A coupon

Stevens Pass
NEVADA CITY----The
William Morris Stewart
Chapter of E, Clampus Vitus
threw its weight behind the
proposed naming Stevens
Pass of the new freeway route
north of the present Donner
Pass, :
By resolution ata meeting
last night, the group stressed
that Stevenshad been overlooked by history, having
only a creek in the San Jose
area named after him.
Stevens" passage through
the Sierra in 1844 was without incident and over roughly the sameroute being used
for the freeway, they said,
In other action, the Clampers set March 4 as a meeting date to discuss the merger of the William Morris
Stewart Chapter with the
William Bull Meek Chapter.
Headquarters for the combined chapter will be in
Nevada City, Grand Humbug Bob Wyckoff said,
The Stevens Pass resolution follows: }
Whereas theCalifornia .
state division of highways at
present is engaged in establishing a new highway 40
link in the proposed traffic
route over the high Sierra
and
Whereas this route traversesacleftin the High Sierra
nearly two miles north of the
present Donner Pass Route
and
W hereas the newly approved route is close to the
route followed by the
Stevens party in 1844 and
Whereas the party led by =
Stevens negotiated the route .
without great difficulty and
Whereas the name Stevens
has been sadly neglected in
the annals of emigrant travel, therefore be it
Resolved, that the name
Stevens Pass be applied to
the present high Sierra route
over the summit and be it
further
-tions is at the bottom of this
page.
Cecil Edmunds, chairman
of the Nevada County Planning Commission, expressed
delight at the responseto the
Nuggets plea for suggested
names for the pass.
' The Stevens Pass suggeshave all come from Nevada
City to date,
Mrs, James B, Christie
emphasized her choice of
Stevens Pass by explaining,
"The truly historic significance of this party---which
succeeded ---has been overshadowed by its unsuccessful
successor for too long, ”
Mrs, Christie's reference
to the honors given the illfated Donner Party were
borne out by other suggestions tothe Nugget. Not one
has contained the name
Donner. 5
But there are several other
names or combination of
names that have appeared
‘repeatedly in the coupons
mailed from as far as Woodland Hills in Southern California, and from Hayward,
Concord, Davis, SanRafael,
and other Northern California cities.
Many of the suggestions
included the word crest. Of
these, Sierra Crest was the
most popular, but others included: Eagle Crest Highway, Stony Crest Pass, and
Golden Crest Highway.
Others using Sierra in their
suggestions included these
names: El Camino Sierra,
Sierra Pass, Royal Sierra
Highway, Regal Sierra Pass
and Regal Sierra Highway.
Another popular word among the suggestions was
"golden", It brought GoldenDream Highway, Golden
State Pass, and Golden Highway tothe Stars, in addition
to Golden GrestHighway.
Two readers suggested
naming the pass after persons
other than Stevens,
R.1, Slyter, Corte Madera,
suggested the name LewisSalvador Pass to honor two
Indian vaqueros who lost
their lives in an attempted
rescue attempt when sent by
Captain Sutter with provisions forthe starving Donner
party.
A.F, Matthews, S@MRafael, suggested Snowshoe
Thompson. Pass,
"There is no one in the
history of the Sierra County
more deserving of this honor
than the corageous man who
carried the mail over these
mountains when it was so
much needed and no one else
could do it," he said.
Other suggestions included:
New Summit Diversion, Pioneer Highway, Pioneer Pass,
Nevada Pass, Paradise Pass
and Eagle Pass,

TOWN TALK---It was
only logical to install a hydraulic monitor at the entrance of the new Nevada
Union High School, It was
logical for agricultural students to plan a series of
planters for low growing
plants and shrubs,
Yesterday the agricultural
students were anchoring iron
rails at ashort distance from
the planter area sothat autos
would not damage the landscaping work,
Ghosts of hydraulic mining. A student punctured the
six inch water line leading
to the high school and the

geyser that in itself would
make an impressive fountain.
But that was not all, In

District Superintendent

The International Farm
Youth Exchange program is
a two-way experiment in
developing world understanding. It gives farm youth
from California, and all of
the United States, the chance
to live and work in other
countries,
IFYEs work and live in
various lands, and when they
retum, they bring vital understanding of the world and
its problems to their neighbors,
IFYE teaches international
relations to young farm
people in a person-to-person
way. Itilluminates the
problems--of-world peace as
basic, shared human hopes,
It shows how work toward international cooperation is a
satisfying, however constant,
struggle, local 4-H leaders
say.
The IFYE program is sponsored by the University of
California Agricultural Extension Service. The cost
of the program is met by
voluntary contributions from
individuals and organizations, Nevada County's requirement is $1200 by Feb.

Replaced By Aluminum
New Door
Meets With
Approval
NEVADA CITY ---Storm
clouds of protest gathered
over Nevada City last week
when city crews replaced the
doors of the old firehouse on
Broad Street with a new aluminum overhead door,
But the clouds dissipated
into murmurs of protest over
the weekend, and now there
seems to be strong backing
for the new door,
Thenew door was approved
and installed by the city at
the request of the Nevada
City Fire Department, City
Manager James(Admiral)
Ray said today as he prepared
to turn the city administration over to newly named
City ManagerCharles
Smith,
City Manager Ray said the
door was replaced because
the old door was heavy,
built of solid wood, and was
the victim of dry rot.
The fire depart ment needed the new door in order to
give quicker access to the
city rescue truck, he said,
Itwillbe painted in a manner to be fitting to the historic value of the building.
Elza Kilroy, historical
society leaderand former
president of the society, agreed withthe city manager
that the doorsreplaced were
not old ones,
Kilroy said he believes the
doors were placed on the
building in 1913 when the fire
department became motor‘ized. Atthattime, the door
opening was not large
enough fora firetruck, having only housed the horsedrawn vehicles, The departmént then removed one la=
yer of bricks on each side of
the door to enlarge it, and
at that time installed the
doors replaced last week.
The city manager's contention that painting of the
door will help to maintain
the historical appearance of
the building drew support
from two local artists,
Charles Woods and David
Osborn both said the new
door can be in keeping with
the old building's architectural beauty. They suggest
painting the building trim
and door, pointing out that
the trim alsoneeds painting.
