Colfax Highway Group
Meeting Well Attended
Seventy enthusiastic members
. of the Colfax Highway Association over filled the Peardale
Fire House at their Jan, meeting.
The officers confirmed for
1968 were Al. Davis, President,
Bruce McDonald, Vice -president, Joyce Weiss, recording
secretary, Joan Horton, corresponding secretary and Millie
Mills, Treasurer.
Joe Ruess gave a well received
talk on the preservation of Colfax Highway as a scenic highway,
illustrated by his fine color
slides, :
It was announced that the organization plans to have a program available to present for the
entertainment of any interested
organizations. This program will
be on ColfaxHighway and its
environs, illustrating the colorful seasons and giving the reasons for asking that this road
be preserved as a Scenic Highway.
Members of the safety committee of the association reported on having conferred with
Lts. Allan Axton andE.A. Lewis, _
officers in charge, respectively,
of the Grass Valley and Gold
Run headquarters of the State
Highway Patrol. Factual data
and official statistics which these
officers voluntarily supplied
prove conclusively that widening
limit of 45. miles per hour be
established and enforced on the
section of route 174 under con‘sideration.
Following this report a resolution was proposed and approved by the members present.
That the Scenic Colfax Highway
be preserved and maintained in
its entirety essentially as it is
today, both as to routing and
essential features.
That a maximum speed limit of
45 miles per hour be established,
clearly marked, and enforced
over that portion of the Colfax
Highway (State route #174) beginning ‘at the Grass Valley City
limits and ending at the junction with old U.S, 40.
That such pedestrian crossing
lanes, and warning signs, and.
further speed restrictions indesignated areas as the State Highway Patrol may deem necessary
to achieve maximum safety on
this highway, be likewise es-tablished.
_ That all stateand county agencies and officials concerned be
requested to give full cooperation to the officers of this —
association and to the members
of its highway safety committee
in their efforts to make this a
safe as well as a scenic highway."
Sargent Waddell, who repreLt. Axton at the meeting
spoke briefly and emphasized
the fact, that local residents,
whose familiarity with the road
may have made the careless,
should check up on their driving
habits. Practice considerate
driving and observe the proposed
speed limit. He said that he did
not want our members to be the
