If the weather is any indication of a good year, then Penn
Valley has it. Saturday and Sunday of this 1972 were bright and
sunny and warm, Iknow every kid
in the neighborhood was out on
Sunday, getting in that last little
bit of new bike riding, football
or basketball playing. Even saw
several little girls out rollerskating on the blacktop.
Jerry Russell has two little
male dogs that he would like to
find homes for. One is acockerdachshund and the other is a
beagle dachshund. Both are
black and tan and house-broken.
If. homes cannot be found for’
them, they will have to go to the
pound, The Russell boys will be
going away to college and Jerry
will be away a good deal of the
time and there will be no one to
care for the little dogs.
Mrs. Eleanor Sherman who
lives at Mrs, Nellie Baker's
Rest Home spent Christmas with
her daughter, Mrs. Berle Holt,
of Nevada City. Another resident
of Mrs. Baker's Rest Home,
Mrs. Marion McCall was with
her daughter, Mrs, Alfred Styles
of Alta Sierra for Christmas,
Lee (Deke) DeCamp accompanied Mrs. Baker to Napa for
the Christmas festivities.
Peter Andrenaccihadthe misfortune of dislocating his elbow
on New Year's eve. He and his
older brothers, Chuck and
Lennie were wrestling and Pete
got the worst end of it.
He'll have his arm ina sling
for a few days and then he should
be good as new again.
Bob and: Barbara Nix, Marty .
and Teri Dahl and Doug Russell
returned home this past week
from a Christmas trip to Yaki.
ma, Washington, where they had *
gone to be with Barbara's parents, Mr. and Mrs, C, N. Herr,
Teri was honored at a bridal :
shower, Dec. 26, at the James
Whitaker home in Ellensburg,
Washington. The Whitaker home
' of Victorian style has been beautifully decorated with restored
__ antiques by Mrs,, Whitaker, This
was carried out in the theme of
the shower. The buffet luncheon
was served on lovely antique
dishes which are part of one of
many of Joann Whitaker's collections. The gifts were presented to the future Mrs, Russell on
an antique Victorian lamp table
which was covered by a very old
velvet tapestry. The decorations
were yellow, green and white,
in a bride motif. Those present besides the guest of honor
and the hostess were the two
grandmothers of the bride tobe, Mrs. C. N. Herr of Yakima,
Washington, and Mrs. Martin
Dahl of Selah, Wash, Teri's
mother, Mrs. Bob Nix of Penn
Valley, Mrs, Donald Mollet of
Seattle and Mrs, Elmer Dahl of
Richmond, Wash., both aunts of
Teri. Mrs, Avery Stevens, Mrs,
Dennis Christopherson, Mrs.
Jack Williams and Miss Julie
Christopherson of Ellensburg,
Wash, and Mrs, Pat Moran of
Skykomish, Wash. Among the
gifts Teri received was a receipe book with favorite receipes
of those present plus some used
by her great-grandmothers, a
great aunt and other family
members, Teri also received

gifts from the following who were
unable to attend because of illness or travel: Mrs. Marlan
Briskey, Mrs. Conrad Lust and
Mrs. Swede Henderson, all of
Yakima, *
Mrs. Whitaker's earliest interest in antiques began with
collecting buttons and she stimulated this same interst in Teri
as a small child. Teri has continued her hobby of collecting
buttons and now has a fair size
antique button collection. It also
appears that maybe Teri and
Doug have been caught up in the
antique fever. They are busy restoring an antique camel back
trunk in which tostore the shower gifts until their wedding in
August.

“Notes off the Cuff’
By P. L. Smith
When you read this, there
will be only 360 more days until Christmas! Just remember
this however..every dollar you
spent away from home last
Christmas is lost to you--and
the local economy forever. But
every last penny that you did
spend at home will circulate
again and again, and may eventually return to your own pocket. So next time around..plan
ahead and shop at home..early!
* Ok
Nothing is more bloodcurdling than the screech of a cat
upon whose tail you have trod..
especially in the dark. And
if the noise quotient of one cat
is bad..just try that of two
for size..as I did Christmas
Eve when all the lights went
out--BOOM--late that night. I
had forgotten about leaving Mix
and Match. in the trailer when
I went out for dinner. On my
return..in pitch dark..they
were obviously more than ready
to welcome me .in their usual
friendly fashion--but I found
them first and didn't need an
electric. shock to make my hair
stand on end, either! It took
me quite a while and much
coaxing to get back into their
good graces,
The next day I set off another
chain reaction..but the results
were more hilarious than otherwise, Santa Fe Ryan gave my
"pixilated pussies" a big redcarpet covered "scratching
post"..something every cat
should have. When I "unveiled"
it for their edification and an. joyment all sorts of things happened. . The little darlings had
never encountered anything quite
like that gorgeous gift before..
they hissed, spit, popped and
* crackled all around and over

Finally, Match--the more aggressive of the two cats--seemingly decided that anything which
sat perfectly still and didn't
make nasty noises back at her
couldn't be all bad. So..she
stalked the post very quietly
from first one side and then
the other. Suddenly she pounced,
very hard and dead center..
meeting Mix headon! It wasa totally unplanned encounter
and made the fur really fly-for
a few minutes. When the tuBete z 7 sf ae mult died down, neither cat was

ful the way some stories get
around town. Seems some folks
aren't too geography-oriented
hereabouts..why, do you know..
some of them think that the Nugget isn't a "local" publication?
And here I've been laboring un‘der the impression that this office at Broad and Pine (where
I spend many hours at this
typewriter on behalf of the paper)
is about as "local" as something or anything in beautiful
downtown Nevada City can git!
©f course being a "County"

that Penn Valley, Cedar Ridge,

apt to come as an awful shock
when someone tells them that
the world is round!
