New Year Résolutions
For Gardeners
If you are making New Year
resolutions this week, how about
adding a few that deal with gardening Or doyour gardening
habits stand above reproach? We
know ours. don’t. i
We know, for instance, as the
California Association of Nurserymen recently suggested, that we
hang onto shrubs that have outlived their usefulness simply beeause we can’t bear to tear them
out. We therefore resolve to uproot the two roses we’re not wild
about anyway and to replace
them with two new 1960 introductions.
Now ,check these other resolutions and see if any apply to you.
And while you are at it, add some
more of your own.
Resolved:
That I will plan ahead this year
to have the color combinations I
want when I want them. (Particularly will I plant white stock
and pink snapdragons in the same
bed.)
That I will harden my heart
and uproot the overgrown foundation planting on the street side
of my house . (To be replaced
with lower and slower growing
material such as dwarf juniper
and India hawthorne.) _
That I will give my roses the
attention they deserve so that I
may ‘enjoy. them from spring
through fall. (No bush shall flag
for lack of water: nor suffer for
want of food. Aphis shall not get
GOING PLACES? .
Dos’ forget your’
° # Besa or Pleure Tepe
will be suggested.)
These are only some of our
resolutions, There are others to
do with lawn and hedge—and
what have you. Some, we know,
will be broken, but that’s all
right, too. If they don’t all get
don this year, we'll resolve to
jo them next—and, sooner or
later, we'll get them done for
sure,

Experimenting with aircraft
spraying of phenoxy herbicides
on the John Allen ranch in Amador County, University of California researchers killed, blue
oak most effectively with the
ester of 2,4,5-TP.
Davis botanist O. A. Lee
and.C. E. Carlson of the division
of forestry achieved the best
results by spraying in May of
the first year, in June of the
second year, and in May of the
third year, With this spraying
schedule, the 2,4,5-TP killed 90
per cent of the blue oak. and
most of the poison oak, they
reported.
Because of the promise shown
by 2,4,5-TP, further testing is
planned with the herbicide.

The tonnage figure, compiled
by the California Farm Department’s crop and ‘livestock reporting service ,lists the new record
as 6 per cent larger than the previous high crop yield of 30,200,000
tons in 1957.
“The record production clearly
demonstrates the advantage enjoyed by irrigated agriculture,
since most of the state’s crop
land is irrigated,” said the department's report.
“Field crop acreage and production set new records in 1959.
Fruit production was near a rec.

than the light 1958 crop.
“Vegetable production was
down about 6 per cent because
of a smaller tomato crop. Growers harested the third largest

Lost Pear Trees
Can Be Replaced
University of California and
Agricultura] Extension Service
specialists told Delta pear growers last week that pear trees hit
by “pear collapse,” which made
its first appearance last summer,
probably can be replaced suecessfully with young trees.
In the Pacific Northwest, where
what appears to be the same condition has ravaged pear orchards
for several years, replants have
grown well. The young treés are
on rootstocks other than the Oriental varieties, in which the highest percentage of collapse or de-eline has appeared:
About 95 growers attended the
first of two annual pear meetings
slated in the Delta area. 'Sacramento County Farm Advisor Gordon Morehead said the second, to
be held during January or February, will be econcernsd with insect and disease control and
marketing. problems.
