Steady Rain Soaks The County HISTORY PAYS in Nevada City, At least it paid off to have this old cash register at the Golden Eagle Antique Shop on Commercial Street when a burglar tried to enter the place early New Year's Eve. The old register shown here by owner Cora Davis, is difficult to open and $200 in the register was left untouched, Lone Burglar Hits Six Nevada City Stores New Year's Eve A lone burglar put the touch on six Nevada City shops in the early hours of New Year's Eve, but got little except wet feet for his troubles. 4 According to acting Nevada City Police Chief Clarence Martz, it appears that only two of the six business houses were actually entered, Excel Gems on the corner of Commercial and Pine Streets was entered and $5 was stolen. Haley's Antique Shop in the Hot Mill on Main and Union Streets was also entered and about $7 was taken, At the other four places all located on Commercial Street, some attempt at entry was made, but police are unable to tell if actual entry was made. Evidence of attempted entry was found at Osborn& Woods, .the Golden Eagle Antique Shop, the office of Dr. George Boles and the Customhouse, The door of the Goiden Eagie had been pried with a bar with such force that the wood around the lock had been split, but the sturdy old cash register located near the door was either untouched by the burglar or too difficult to open. The old cash register which has been around Nevada City for many years. had $200 in the drawer. City police are still investigating the case. Leaks, slides, clogged drains, washouts, flooding, car troubles, and frayed tempers tell the story of the physical toll which has been exacted in Western Nevada County during the past three weeks, due to an unflagging series of storms. both Grass Valley and Nevada City has gone over 50 inches. A few of the many recent storm caused troubles include: + A tree sank yesterday into the old Narrow Gauge tunnel at Town Talk, blocking the Sutton Way shortcut. + The D-S canal above Brunswick Rd, collapsed yesterday morning, flooding the Nevada County Horsemen's recreation Freeway Or Not, It Is Still A Wild Ride Over Donner By Don Hoagland All of the stories you have heard, read or seen about the Donner Summit crossing in the past couple of weeks are all true. I know because I crossed it last weekend, Saturday was our first crossing over the new summit road because we had been forced to leave our carin Colfax earlier in the week and catch the train to Truckee. Two things become cyrstal
clear when crossing the summit in a raging snow storm such as we had last weekend, First, the state division of highways is doing a masterfuljob of keeping the road open, I was also impressed with the fact that despite all our modern engineering and machinery, the Donner crossing is still a wild and wooley place at this time of year andno place for the faint of heart or those unfamiliar with driving (Gontinued on Page 2) area, +A slide at the Brunswick Rd. opposite the sawmill cut a solid gash across one lane of the two lane artery. + Excessive runoff at Forest Glade subdivision in Grass Valley at the west end of Main St. _° The-seasonss-rotata jaifad! forn-caused.a. flood of water and mud on local streets, which city crews were bulldozing away yesterday. + There was more flooding on Mill St. in Grass Valley, in the Boston Ravine area. +There were numerous clogged or overflowing drains and culverts in Nevada City, Grass Valley, Controller Post Nevada County Supervisors after several months of talking about it, quickly moved Monday to create the post of county controller. The action came in the afternoon session directly after the seating of new supervisor, Bret Bennallack and the election of Gene Ricker to the seat of chairman, The supervisors then went into executive session andwhen they reconvened they quickly moved through three actions to create the post of controller, The first action was the passage of an ordinance a mending the 1884 section of the county code which combined the posts of county clerk and auditor, This ~ section of the code was deleted by ordinance and the new combined post of clerk-recorder was created, By law, former clerk-auditor John T rauner now becomes the county controller and. former recorder Ted Kohler now takes over the new combined post of clerkrecorder, ‘Both must run for elec-tion tothenew combined posts at the next county election. The second action taken by the supervisors was passage of an ordinance to change the cohtroller's salary from the parttime rate of $75 per month to $250 full time and set the combined salary of the clerk-recorder at $9,000. The final action in the series was to enact the section of the government code which establishes the position of county con~ Created troller. The controller will work on the orders of the board of supervisors as an accounting officer on strict~ly fiscal matters. The job now done by Trauner as clerk to the board will be taken over by Kohler and Trauner will appear before the board only on fiscal matters. A telegram was read from Gov~ ernor Edmund Brown congratulating the county on the performance of the people during the storm and (Continued on Page 13) SWITCHOVER tothe new Nevada County Courthouse Annex was in full swing this week.
