County’s All-Time Rain Record Is $ Threatened By Three Week Storm Over three weeks of steady, occasionally fierce rainfall have produced some startling totals for Nevada County. Latest forecasts indicate continued rain through the weekend. Since Dec, 11 Nevada City has -had39.9 inches of rain, an average of over an inch and a half a day. As of yesterday, the seasonal total was50. 82 inches in Nevada Nature Stil-Roles The Summit When Winter Weather Rages (Continued from Page 1) in snow. Unfortunately despite the dogged efforts of the Highway Patrol and highway crews to weed out all but the most determined and necessary traffic, some of the faint of heart and the uninitiated doslip through and for them thetripcan bea terrifying experience. There have been few days in recent weeks when visibility on the Donner Summit could be called anything better than terrible, It is bad enough when it is snowing, but the combination of a snow storm and high wind.blowing the drifting snow back into the road makes it virtually impossible to see. Although the road is being constantly plowed andthe track widened, new snow is constantly falling and. old snow. is being OO ROP ORO OG NOG} WORLD PRESS DISPATCHES President Presents Sweeping Program President Johnson called for “a new quest for Union" in his State of the Union address before Congress in WASHINGTON Monday night. He advanced many proposals, among them: a cut in ex~cise taxes; creation of a special fund which the President could expend for job-creating public works programs in case of economic recession; extension of the minimum wage law to workers not’ covered; regional recovery programs for depressed areas; creation of a pilot high-speed train NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET Published Every Thursday By NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET, INC. 318 Broad Street, Nevada City, Calif. In many places drifting snow reduced the four lane freeway to one narrow lane in-each direction. No matter how bad the weather there is always at least one guy who goes tearing down the road apparently oblivious to everything except his compulsion to be at the head of every line of traffic. There are also several characters who, despite hundreds of signs ‘along miles of roads, insist on trying to sneak through without chains, They are always caught either by the officials or by the weather and in either case their vehicle ends up blocking traffic for those who have obeyed the signs and the laws, I am sure that the new Donner freeway over the summit is a beautiful stretch of road, but when the snow is flying parallel to the ground it is difficult to tell, BétWeEn Boston dnd Washington; Medicare; $1.5 billion in assistance to schools and students, Also: an immigration law “based on the work a man can do and not where he was born"; assis~ tance for community development programs within metropolitan areas; creation of a new cabinet department of housing and urban development; program to establish a “green legacy” in more parks and public recreation areas, highway landscaping and city improvement; electoral college reform and revised presidential succession procedure; federal author ity to forestall air and water pollution; outlawing of right -to-work laws; new programs for the controlling of crime; a system of regional medical centers to combat major diseases; enforcement of the civil rights act and action to secure Negro voting rights. In his reference to foreign affairs the President said "We will not, and should not, assume it is the task of Americans alone to settle all the Conflicts of a torn and troubled world, Let the foes of freedom take no comfort from this. For in concert with other nations, we shall help men defend their freedom." The President said he would like to see the Soviet leaders visit the U.S. He saidthe U.S, is in Viet-Nam because it has been requested to be there bya “friendly” government. + tit + _Indonesia announced at the UNITED NATIONS that it will withdraw from the U.N. in protest against the seating of Malaysia on the Security Council, City, and 50,29 in Grass Valley. The yearly total usually averages about 54 inches in Nevada City. Yet the winter is barely two weeks old. Atthis rate, the all-time record of 89 inches recorded for Grass Valley in 1890 could be smashed. An indication of the extent, of this year's deluge can be found in a comparison of the total as of Jan, 6 withthe totals to that date in the past four years, 1965: 50.82 inches; 1964: 17.65 inches; 1963: 30.94 inches; 1962: 13.75 inches; 1961: 14, 23 inches, Already, this season's total rainfall is greater than the total
through July 1in three of the past five years, The biggest splash of rain in the current series of storms took place on Dec, 22 and 23, when 11.52 inches came down, The total on the first of those days was 6.07. . Thisweek's big storm of Tuesday night, which produced fantastically heavy rain in a short time. period, produced a “mere” three inches. Statistical buffs have been poring happily over their record charts while the rain has been pouring outside. Byron Tarr of Union Hill Rd., former superintendent of water systems for the city of Palo Alto, has produced a graph of annual rainfall for Grass Valley going back to 1873. _.Tarr.s@ys he -hasstudied-his graph carefully to try to determine whether a study of rain cycles can help predict this year's total rainfall, He has concluded thatthe rainfall pattern is basically unpredictable, But nevertheless, he thinks this year's total willbe “awfully close” tothe alktime record of. 89 inches, recorded 75 years ago, Rain totals in Western Nevada County are always a source of wonder in closely adjacent areas of Northern California, In the Sacramento area, for example, annual totals seldom reach twofifths of the totals here. West put together an ingenious pump made out of an antique hat pin, string, an air conditioner pump and an old glass thermostat. It works perfectly, but the rain is coming faster than the pump can carry it away. Damage MountsThe Storm (Continued from Page 1) and in unincorporated county areas Wednesday morning. + Chuck-holes appeared all over the place. + Power outages in the Nevada City and Penn Valley areas were restored Wednesday. Crews were still working to restore power in theBlue Tent area, and up Highway 20, A check of local service stations and garages suggests the extent of the difficulties people have been having since before Christmas, Gene Curtoni, handling service calls forthe California State Automobile Association in Grass Valley, reports he has handled 175 service calls out of Hockett's garage since the preChristmas storm. The main difficulty with drivers is about evenly divided between wetengines, dead batteries, and stuck vehicles, he reports. Smokey Haddy, manager of the Plaza Wilshire station, and his assistant Jim-,Pennington, report they put on at least 100 sets of tire chains during the holiday snowstorms, During the heavy snow "I had 15 cars lined up at one time,” according to Haddy. Pennington said there have been many service calls from people with dead batteries, “The driver will step on the starter and let it gotillthe battery goes dead," he explained, Ray Borchard, conservationist with the U.S, Soil Conservation Roundup Service in Grass Valley, reports there has been no major flooding in this area from an agricultural standpoint, But he points out that areas which have been stripped for subdivisions or other purposes and not seeded are very subject to severe. erosion. This erosion hurts not only those areas but adjacent streets and drains. “These storms prové more than anything the need for ground cover,” according to Borchard, A spokesman for.the U.S, Forest Service in Nevada City, assistant engineer Ed Neuman, said the soil had loosened up considerably in the Tahoe Forest. “We're anticipating some erosion but it's impossible to assess the damage right now,” he said, Areas recently logged over should not suffer too. much damage, he said, "if they were logged properly, “ At the Plaza Grocery in Nevada City, where a raging Deer Creek knocked out the supporting trusses of the grocery store-room before Christmas, owner John Sbaffi said Deer Creek had risen again yesterday morning, making repairs impossible, A portion of the building which spans Little Deer Creek isnow hanging in mid-air, un ~supported, Sbaffi said steel beams would be put in to support the building, as soon as possible. There is no immediate danger, he said, although the building has cracked and slipped some. G96T ‘1 Azenuef***3988nN AunoD epeAen*** w January 7, 1965.. . Nevada County Nugget... @Q
