NORTHERN MINES & CALIFORNIA REPORTS me i BRASH EOI Fh E eet +P Her ++ HEE 4 rE et aa , Leonard Luglan, President of Nevada County Soil Conservation District (left) is shown presenting a Certificate of Merit to William Kohler. The District selected Kohler as the outstanding farmer of the year 1963 in Nevada County. Farmer Of William Kohler of Bitney's Springs Road has been selected by the Nevada County Soil Conserevation District asthe district's Conservation Farmer of the Year. Soil District President Leonard Luglan presented Kohler with a plaque in brief ceremonies recently atthe district headquarters on the Grass Valley-Nevada City. Highway. Kohler operates a 300 acre farm. The farm contains three different types of operation including irrigated and dry pasture, woodland and orchards, His father moved onto the farm in 1895 and atthat time the main business of the land was the production of poles and timber for the mines in the county. Over the years Kohler has added many conservation programs to the land, These include management of his pastures by renovation and reseeding and fertilization, installation of two sprinkler systems, installation of overa mile. of underground drainage, construction of three irrigation reservoirs to control irrigation water, use of one of the larger reservoirs for recreation, construction of 900 feét of concrete lined ditch and installation of over 300 feet of irrigation pipeline. The timber area on the farm was harvested of first growth from 1948-50. Since then Kohler has accomplished many thinning and pruning operations. Wood removed from these thinning jobs was sold for firewood. Santa Claus arrived with toys and a booth was set up to hear the Christmas requests of the children.
