Springs Road has been selected by
the Nevada County Soil Conserevation District asthe district's
Conservation Farmer of the Year.
Soil District President Leonard
Luglan presented Kohler with a
plaque in brief ceremonies recently atthe district headquarters
on the Grass Valley-Nevada City.

Kohler operates a 300 acre
farm. The farm contains three
different types of operation including irrigated and dry pasture,
woodland and orchards,
His father moved onto the farm
in 1895 and atthat time the main
business of the land was the production of poles and timber for
the mines in the county.
Over the years Kohler has added
many conservation programs to
the land, These include management of his pastures by renovation
and reseeding and fertilization,
installation of two sprinkler systems, installation of overa mile.
of underground drainage, construction of three irrigation reservoirs to control irrigation water,
use of one of the larger reservoirs
for recreation, construction of
900 feét of concrete lined ditch
and installation of over 300 feet
of irrigation pipeline.
The timber area on the farm
was harvested of first growth from
1948-50. Since then Kohler has
accomplished many thinning and
pruning operations. Wood removed from these thinning jobs
was sold for firewood. The timber

In addition to all this, Kohler
captured 67 ribbons in the 1964
Nevada County Fair for his superior garden produce.

Installation of new officers of
the Grass Valley Area Chamber of
Commerce which had been scheduled for Saturday night in the
Alta-Sierra Country Club has been
changed to Jan. 23.
George Sawyer, manager of
the Sacramento Valley Council
of the California Chamber of
Commerce, was scheduled to be
the installing officer, but he was
recently promotedto the state
champber's industrial insurance
department and no successor has
been named,

The city's July 4th "Doin’s at
the Diggin's" brought a large
crowd totown and kept them here
throughout the variety of events,
The Fall Festival of Color again
attracted many visitors to view
the city's display of fall foliage.
The. first annualphotographic
contest ,held in conjunction with
the Fall Festival of Color drew 91
entries from six California cities
and one from out of state.

Chamber Installation Scheduled
For Christmas the Chamber
again chose to provide trees to
‘be erected above the business
houses in town. Santa Claus arrived with toys and a booth was
set up to hear the Christmas requests of the children.
A drawing for $100 in gift certificates provided by local merchants topped off the year end
activities of the chamber.
