By Fay M. Dunbar : That glorious time of Good Will and anticipation has come and gone and here we«are embarked on another wonderful New Year. Isuppose this one will have its problems too but don't you always feel a happy surge of optimism, Most-of us seem to have faced up to some of the big issues. of our times and in spite of the trials with erros which are ahead of us, — we're sure to solve them. When it comes to money I get worried. There seems to be a complete lack of any sense of pride or honor evidenced in the making or using of money these days, Get all of it that you can, money is the only thing that's important, seems to be the trend. How it is made or how it is used doesn't seem to concern most people. Money has never been important to me, but I can see what this money worshipping tendency is doing to America and that frightens me. * I like New Years' Resolutions. They have become, for me, a plan for a way of life. I make . one special resolution each year. It is to take better care of my health. This gets me to the dentist, the occulist, and the doctor. It works fine for everything except my appetite. I usually make one other resolution and that is ‘to have more fuh: This year I'm changing the fun one to live each day to the fullest, As time goes by I realize more and more the importance of the advice "do it today, there is ne tomorrow." There are no yesterdays either, for accomplishments that is, but I love yesterdays. They were. exciting and wonderful. Cecelia and. Carol. Miller, daughters of the Robert Millers 4S of Rough and Ready Road were home for the holidays. Carol, who is thinking of becoming a doctor, is.a freshman at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Cecelia is studying at Seattle University. Cecelia's field is. medical records librarian and she is in her fifth year. She did some work at the University of Reno, Nevada and is now getting her practical application of records librarian at Providence nate in Seattle. = ** & The Everett (Jack) Bixlers spent Christmas week with relatives and friends in San Jose. and in San Francisco, Mrs, Bixler says mostly the weather was good and that they thoroughly enjoyed their holiday. It was good to see their darkened house _ bright. with Christmas lights on New Years Eve. eek I walked up over the hill back of our barn yesterday and stirred up a big covey of quail, I knew they had been up there last fall but supposed they were gone, They like that back hillside because people never get over there. It has lots of cover and earlier there was plenty of food. I can't imagine what they are oF deve funa Se ‘es £ ES CIES POLISS. OSs at * PER Siete 273-2934 finding to eat now. The cows have graxed the hillside clean of everything but that wretched ° bunch grass. My encyclopedia Says they eat "weed seed, grains, and small insects." but its surely too cold up there now for any insects. They are small soft looking little creatures but the whirr their wings make when they break cover sure sounds powerful, ; * * I just took a breather and wandered out on the porch to check my house plants, poor bedragled looking things, I don't . take proper care of them, and I found a real surprise. The. Chinese Jade plant which we've had potted ever since we moved up here from warm country in 1956 is blooming. I guess it isn't unusual, but I"ve never seen one in bloom before. It has two clusters of small insignificant star shaped blossoms with a faintly pinkish color. That surely must be one way of starting the New Year right. *** Mr, and Mrs, Terry (Joann) Stevens and family spent Christmas in Fremont with Joann's mother and father, Mr. and Mrs, Rasmussen and then spent New Year's Day with Mr. Stevens' parents in Chowchilla, What a nice holiday for young Terry, Denise, and ‘Diane Stevens and = I read a most interesting comment the other day on Freedom versus Liberty which reminded me of the importance of semantics in this so called Communication Gap which makes "getting. together" very difficult. I must get a new dictionary, Mine was published in 1947 so you cansee why I tend to think of Freedom "the right of enjoying all the
PRIVILEGES". of unsubjugated people and. of. "unwarranted or impertinant freedom inaction or speech" as liberties not in everones best interests, A square, I'm proud to say, and even though I must get a new dictionary so I can know the semantics of what's going on,. I still. intend to hang onto my old one, It has © the basically good and important things in it. %* ok & John and Jessie Haskell who have been living in Fresno. for the last four years spent Christmas in’Rough and Ready. They have been visiting for mer neighbors the Van Johnsons, the Ed. Johnsons, the William Bursills and the Ernest Wymers. *e2 . The ERNEST Wymers have had Mrs, Wymer's sisters Mr. and Mrs, Robert Carscadden of Concord and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Semon of Martinez with them for the holidays. Mr. Wymer's family Mr. and Mrs. James L, Vikery of Rough and Ready and the Wymer's son, Bert, who now has his own apartguest Miss Christine Rorden of Grass Valley. FS eee. © (Mrs. Sue Fay and her eee _ ter Pam flew back Tuesday to spend Christmas with MrsFay's parents” of Naples, Florida.‘Sue's parents are nearly 80 and ‘Sue was thrilled that they were able to visit them. Jan. 7, 1970 The Nevada — iat 3 Social Security bénefits. going up $70, 000 here Social security beneficiaries not apply for the 15 perseul nefit increase just signed. into law by President Nixon. "Every one of the 25 million men, women and children now on the benefit rolls will receive the increase automatically," Robert M.-Ball, commissioner of social Security, said today. About one out of every eight Americans is now receiving a social security check each month. As of the end of December these monthly payments in Nevada and Sierra counties totalled $467,000. The monthly total will go up by $70,000as the 15 per cent benefit increase becomes effective. "The first regular check inthe new amount will arrive April 3," said Commissioner Ball, A separate check-in the amount of the benefit increase for the months of January and February will reach beneficiaries after April 20. Refiguring the benefit amounts of the people already entitled to ~ social security is a tremendous task, Commissioner Ball pointed out, and it must be done without interrupting the regular benefit payment cycle, Baboons are swbject to high blood pressure, heart disease and hardening of the arteries.
