KING & SON Anyone visiting the mountains will observe with pleasure the alert attractive manner of these little squirrel-like animals, and if encouraged they will accept you as neighbors, They learn to recognize a friend and will come right into camp to receive food. Like all the squirrel family, they are very curious, At the appearance of-anything unusual, but not too alarming, they will seek a vantage point and peer nervously with great interest. To these small creatures, the world is full of enemies such as cats, dogs, weasels, hawks, owls, snakes and most small boys. This may account for their cautious, halting run and low,’ chirping call that is accompanied by the slow undulations of the tail. The cail note of the chipmunk, when it is extremely alarmed, is a high-pitched chirp repeated so rapidly that the syllables almost run together. This call indicates unrestrained tery and but because they are known to harbor fleas and woodticks that carry Spotted fever, caution should be used in determining if the area in which the chipmunk :is captured is disease free. They find an abundance of food ‘in seeds, berries, nuts and buds, and they are busy all summer -Storing food. Unlike the tree squirrels, _ chipmunks pouches inside their cheeks to carry their food. Some of it is Stored in little holes in the forest floor, which are then carefully covered with dirt. Some food is taken to small storerooms in their den or nest to be used as For the most part, chipmunks
make their nest underground, burrowing under a log or into a rocky ledge. Occasionally one will use the abandoned nest of a woodpecker high in a tree. In the northern part of their range, they usually retire to their dens in late September and, if it is cold, remain there until the fol‘lowing March or April. They mate soon after coming out fram the long winter sleep. The young, two to six in number, are born about one month later. By August, young chipmunks are out with their parents. The short summers in the northern part of their range only allow time for one litter to be raised, However, in the southern part of their range where they do not hibernate, they may raise more than one litter, as do some other small mammals, There is another beautifully marked little animal found on the floors of most of California's Pine and fir covered mountains except in the coast range south of San Francisco, It is commonly accepted as a chipmunk, yet it is the golden mantle ground squirrel, a little larger and more brightly colored than the chipmunk. Close examination makes it easy to distinguish from chipmunks as it has a yellowish or copper colored head with no stripes, and it has only two light stripes bordered with dark Stripes on its back.
