FIRE OF YET undetermined -origin: destroyed the Lewis
La Guerra home on Orchard Springs Road in Chicago Park
at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday. Car] Bauch, chief of the
Peardale Chicago Park Fire Department, unofficially estimated the loss at $25,000. Willard Cornelius, a neighbor,
was awakened ‘by exploding ammunition stored in the home
Bauch said. The LaGuerras
were not home at the time. The chief said the comparatively
nhew wood: frame and brick veneer~one-story dwelling: was
completely involved when all available equipment arrived.
Four trucks and 12 men responded to the call. $5,000 loss
was logged in the entire fire district in 1969, The department responded-to 15 calls, which included three -structure
fires, last year. (Photo courtesy Peardale-Chicago Park

iciting your votes in June.
Nevada county voters willhelp
fill plenty of offices -from
county government positions to
governor and U. S, senator on
primary election day June 2,
Interest in the 1970 elections
will begin building shortly as the
time to file for office_starts
on Feb, 23 -seven. weeks
from today.
Between then and March 20,
the last filing date,.anyone who
has aspirations for an elective
office will be visiting the county
clerk's office at least twice -first to get nomination papers,
then to return them with the
needed signatures and some
cash.
Candidates don't get to run
for free. They have to plunk down
a filing fee of two per cent of
one year's pay for the office they
are seeking» The exceptions are
district attorney and Superior
“Court Judge, which for some
reason require only a one per
cent filing fee to get in the
In addition, ‘candidates must
get between 20and 30 supporters to sign a nominating petition.

incumbents are expected to try
to -keep.-their jobs; Here's a
look at the local offices on the
ballot. and some. of the possible
candidates:
--County supervisor. District
four, which. encompasses western Grass Valley to. the county
line, will be on the ballot as
will district three, Grass Valley
to Nevada City.
William Thomas is the incumbent in district four and Robert Long, appointed after the
death ofLou Hartman in September, is the district three
supervisor.
Bothmen almost certainly
will seek election, and both could
have opposition, although no definite candidates have arisen yet.
Most likely possibilities are
Carl Early, who sought the third
district appointment, and Elizabeth George, who has been active in economic development
activities and lives in district
four.
--Superior. court judge. Who
will run for this job is awfully
"iffy" right now because who will
be appointed to the job is still
awfully "iffy." It will soon be
two months since Judge Vernon
Stoll announced his retirement,
Jae no one has nega. pamied to,

the seat yet.
At last report, the governor's
staff in charge of such: appointments still:was screening candidates and potential candidates.
--Justice -court judge. Both
Grass ‘Valley. and Nevada Judicial districts have elections in
1970. Nevada City incumbent
Verle Gray probably will run,
but Grass Valley Judge Victor
Montre may retire.Elton. (Champ) Williams,
Grass Valley's constable, has
taken an examination to qualify
as a candidate for justice court
judge, so hemay have thoughts
in that direction.
The county supervisors have
talked about merging the two
judicial districts and made an
aborted try to eliminate the
Grass Valley constable's post
last year. Whether either or both
efforts will-come to fruition before filing time is doubtful now.
--Elective county department
head, At this time, it appears
all incumbents will run again.
They include Assessor. Elton
(Bub) Tobiassen, Auditor John
‘T. Trauner, Dist. Atty. Harold
Berliner, Clerk-Recorder Theodore (Ted) Kohler, Sheriff
Wayne. Brown and Tax CollectorTressucer Marcella se Ps ‘
. another. ,
Opposition could develop for
all of the above, but two people
have been particularly. mentioned as likely candidates, John
Berryman,. a Grass Valley
policeman, is expected torun for
sheriff; and. Robert Enright,
whose. job as NID assessor was
eliminated, has considered
running for treasurer tax collector.
--Legislature and Congress.
Incumbents for Nevada county
voters are Assemblyman Gene
Chappie, State Sen, Stephen
Teale: and Congressman Harold
(Bizz) Johnson, The size of these
districts, all of. which cover
many Sierra mountain counties,
makes. it difficult for a challenger to become known, Still,
Jack Barker of Auburn, who has
twice lost badly to Chappie, is
making noises like a candidate
again, Teale has drawn an op.

do so again.
Those are just-a few of the
possibilities. Many other people
