Top medal for Apollo 8 men Congressman Harold T. (Bizz) Johnson of the Second, mountain -valley counties District has introduced legislation in the U.S, House of Representatives jto authorize award of the Cdngressional Medal of Honor to Apolio 8 Astronauts Frank Borman, William A, Anders, and highest award,"" Congressman Johnson said, "This legislation is but a token of our respect and esteem for their outstanding achievement." Representative Johnson explained that individual legislation authorizing award of the medal was necessary because “general ’ authority originally -given the President to’ award the medal during the Civil War now extends only to heroic:acts performed while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States, ‘In the past," Congressman Johnson said, "Congress has, on rare occasion, taken the unusual step_ofhonoring courageous acts by Americans during peace time by passing specjal legislation authorizing award of the Medal of Honor, This was the. case when the medal was awarded to such other great American explorers as Admiral Richard Byrd and Colenel Charles Lindbergh.” Celebrates 100th year By. LURA ARNOLD . Mrs. Carrie Heilman, known to her many friends inthe Grass Valley area as "Mother Heilman", celebrated her 100th birthday anniversary January 6, This special anniversary was commemorated by an open house Sunday afternoon with members of the Wesleyan Church, which she has attended since arriving in Grass Valley, extending their best wishes. On Monday, the ~ celebration was made complete when her daughters and their families flew in from Hawaii and ~~ Colorado to join in with the local relatives for a family dinner. Congratulations were also received during the day from President Johnson and Governor Reagan. At the age of five, Carrie Virginia Shock, accompanied by her parents began her travels westward by covered wagon train from her birthplace, Mexico,
Missouri. Their first stop was Monte Vista, Colorado, where she grew to womanhood. The memories of that trip are still with her although she was only five years old at the time. Mother Heilman recalls how the wagon train was led, in spite of the many travel hazards of that day, by a skillled wagonmaster. Also that many wagons: in the train turned back because of the warnings along the way of massacréing and pillaging that was waiting along the trail ahead. To Assay office Nevada City will have a post office retaining the historic flavor of Ott's Assay Office if construction bids which soon may be let are accepted bythe United States Post Office Department, If the post office is built 35 additional parking spaces for the city of Nevada City also will be provided on the property where the more than a century old Ott's Assay Office is situated. The city council, at a special meeting Monday night, unanimously voted to negotiate with the federal agency to lease the ground for a post office pursuant to terms outlined in a contract prepared by the post office department, avoid the one really dangerous spot, their train was re-routed for 35 miles to bring them through safely. It was in Monte Vistathat Carrie Shock became the bride of Grant A. Heilman. To this union she was blessed with two boys and two girls. Mother Heilman has nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Mother Heilman. came to Grass 'Valley in 1949 to reside with her. son. Arthur and~ his Wife. “She and Nér daughter -inlaw, Chrissie Heilman, who giver her the tender loving care _ that keeps her pert and alert, still reside at 130 Pine Lane. In spite of her 100 years, Mother Heilman still sews and loves to go picnicing. She has a good sense of humor which endears her to her family and many friends.
