DAVIS--University of California, Davis, Extension and the
Area Services Division of Chico
State College will conduct an extensive survey of community
resources to assist older citizens in Chico this winter and
spring.
This study will climax athreeyear regional project on community planning for aging which
has been conducted in the north
central valley area by UCD Extension under a grant from the
U, S. Administration on Aging.
Results of the survey will be
used at a regional conference
on community planning for aging
to be held next summer,
The project, entitled ComWednesday, Jan. 8, 1969
munity Leadership for Older
Californians, has involved representatives of senior citizen
organizations and community
agencies from nine areas in
Northern California. In addition
to the ChicoParadise area leaders have been trained in Yuba
City Marysville, Stockton, Modesto, Napa, Redding, Auburn,
Lakeport, Sacramento, Yreka,
and Susanville, The project, under the direction of Dr. Glen
Burch, director of UCD-ExtenSion, has also put on seminars
and workshops designed to help
leaders coordinate their efforts
in providing more adequate
services for older people. _
Harvey Roth, lecturer in recPark reservation
forms available
SACRAMENTO-Choice dates
and camping spots may go quickly when 1969 reservations become available for most State
Park campgrounds on January
1, State Parks Director William
Penn Mott Jr. predicted today.
Reservation forms are now
available from State Park System units and at state office
buildings in major cities
throughout California. Forms
and information may also be obtained by writing the State Department of Parks and Recreation, P.O: Box 2390, Sacramento 95811. In the Los Angeles area, forms may be obtained
from the State Department of
Parks and Recreation, 14253
Sunset Boulevard, Pacific Palisades 90272, telephone 4547323.
To make reservations, campers should submit the full camping fee plus. a $1 reservation
charge at the time of the application, :
The parks are accepting applications, ‘
Reservations may not be made
in person at the parks until
after February 28, Mott noted.
This is to give equal opportunity to all applicants, no matter
how far they live from the park
where they wish to camp.
Mott urged campers to mail
in the forms as early as possible, to insure availability of
space on their preferred dates.
Last year one park had all its
Easter week camp spots reserved by January 7, and key
weekends and popular vacation
times were heavily in demand
at many parks,
Over 50,000 reservations
were made last year, when the
* program was begun experimentally to help solve the turnaway
problem. At Southern California
beaches turnaways had been particularly acute, with campers
often waiting vainly in line for
long periods in hope of a vacancy,
Reaction to the new reservation system was overwhelmingly favorable, Mott said, and
even more campers are expected to take advantage of the program this year.

The Nevada County Nugget 9
. Davis undertaking study
_. to assist older citizens
reation at Chico State, will coordinate the study. Dr. John
Sutthoff, Dean of Area Services,
Chico State, will serve as chairman of an advisory committee
made up of representatives of
senior citizens groups and community agencies involved in the
survey.
Information collected from the
Chico survey will be used in
a workshop to be held in late
spring or early summer, Representatives from the nine communities included in the overall project will evaluate collected data and attempt toarrive
at criteria which may be usedto
evaluate services available to
older adults in. similar cities,
Areas under scrutiny in Chico
will include: housing, transportation, social security services
and opportunities, employment
health services,
educational opportunities, shopping centers, and parks and
playgrounds.
The survey will explore ways
in which older people's needs
and interests are being met by
existing social, religious, educational and recreational agencies. Older adults will be asked
how they feel about living in
Chico and attempts will be made
to determine what pressing
needs if any are not being
fulfilled,
Over the past two years several hundred senior: citizens and
community leaders have been
involved in the various com-_munities associated with the
study. With the cooperation of the
California Commission ~ on
Aging, the project helped form
committees on aging in most of
the conimunites., .

older citizens, construction of
low-cost housing, establishing
