District
Asks Tax
Boost —
(NEVADA CITY---Nearly
2400 registered voters in the
Nevada City Elementary
School District are eligible
tovote Tuesday in a special
district election in which the
maximum tax rate may be
taised fromits present $1.05
to $1.50 per $100 assessed
valuation,
The Nevada City school
board called the election in
an effort to boost school re_ceipts sothat the district can
continue its educational program.
Superintendent Ed Browning warns that without the
boost in the tax rate limit,
the district must restrict its
program. .
The district is now taxing
at $1.21 per $100 assessed
vaxiation, 16 cents of the
tax coming in state authorized over-rides.
Browning said the school
board has promised that these
special over-rides will not be
used in the event the proposed $1.50 tax rate maximum is voted,
The superintendent explained that this year's
school budget has been under
constant pressure, since the
district has received less
state aid than was expected.
Asaresult, the district has
been operating with one less
maintenance man than is
necessary, and in recent
weeks principals at both
Nevada City schools have
taught classes rather than
hiré a substitute teacher in
order to conserve funds,
Without the tax hike authority, the district next year
the size of classes, work with
a smaller teaching staff, and
cut down on the purchase of
needed supplies, Browning
said,
Mrs. Yvonne Brownlee resigned earlier this week from
the teaching staff at the
school and she will not be
replaced, Browning said,
The district will merge her
class into two others of the
same grade level, admittedly crowding those third grade
classes.
The election will be held
at the Nevada City Elementary Schoolon Main St. at
Cottage St. from 7 a.m. to
7 p.m.

inquiries about enrollment
The board-has ruled out
use of the Seven Hills School
plant for junior high school
students in the district because of the necessity to
transport students to the
school, since Nevada Cit y

are educated in the elementary school system.
In order to qualify for state
construction aid, the high
school district is checking
procedure for sale of the

Whether the high school

Gelatt said he has written
