commission
cancels meet
Lack of a quorum of county
planning commissioners has
caused the cancellation of a
meeting slated for Thursday
night in the courthouse.
Planning Director Sharon
Boivin announced that all
matters scheduled will be
continued to an indefinite date.
Applicants and property owners
affected by the cancellation will
be re-notified of the new date of
the continued public hearings.
Four of the seven member
commission have resigned
because of the conflictfinancial disclosure law which
became effective Jan. 1. The
commission cannot operate with
the three remaining members.
Supervisors will make
appointments to fill the
vacancies. The commission is.
without a chairman since Bob
Caris, chairman, is among those
who gave up their offices. Also
resigning were W. W. Esterly,
King Aguilar and Robert
Crippen. Remaining members
are Al Sevey, Maxine Hector
and Donald Huber.

Or, what price energy crisis
By PHYLLIS L. SMITH
If your house is not for
burning, and you with it, we
propose to show you a few steps
‘to.overcome the fuel shortage
without sacrificing life, property
and creature comforts in the
process of ‘‘conserving energy.”
This may be a “review” for
some, but the questions still
come up.
For maximum safety in
situations created by cutbacks
in heating oil deliveries, the
following are recommendations
by the industry and the national .

Institute:
Any building, residential or
commercial, must be heated to
at least 40 degrees to guard
against freezing of water in
pipes and other plumbing
fixtures. Accordingly, steps
must be taken to retain the
building’s heat.
So..get with it now and repair
all broken windows, skylights
and doors. Close ventilators in
attics and concealed places, If
you have any doubts at all as to
constant temperature, use a
thermometer. Don’t shut off
heat in any room without giving
a lot of thought to freezing, since
water pipes can be concealed in
" its walls, ceiling or flooring.
And, in the case of unoccupied
buildings, such as a summer
home, be sure to very
completely drain the water
heaters and other water supply
systems. If you do not you are
simply inviting trouble.
NEVER, under any
circumstances, attempt to thaw
pipes by using a blow torch or
open flame of any kind. Instead
use hot water or some heating
element approved by the
Underwriters’ Laboratories.
And, at the same time, check the
provisions of your insurance as
to .coverage based on today’s
values in the event of a freezeup. Underinsured property will
not return the full replacement
costs in the event of such a loss.

property at least.
Such heaters draw heavy
loads of current and can easily
cause a dangerous overload on
your wiring system.
Underwriters agree that it is
particularly risky, and even
fatal, to use any foreign
material to bypass a fuse box to
halt their operation in event of
an overload and convert the
wiring into a ready breeder of a
destructive or fatal fire. So

you get ready for bed, be sure

_Never ever use gasoline to
start any fire..the fumes could

Furthermore, before you begin
a season’s use of the fireplace,
have it checked to be sure that
the chimney and damper are

remember that a single bird or

much smoke damage to your
