Page 6...Sunday, July 1, 1962...THE NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET i) & — Second class postage paid at No, 12,406 Three years, $8.00 Atos CON, A. te os POD R, Dean Thompson. ........ . Editor-Manager Adjudicated a legal newspaper of general circulation by the Nevada County Superior Court, June 3, 1960 Decree Subscription Rates: One year, $4.00; Two years, $6.00 Printed by Charles Allert Litho, Nevada CityNevada City, Calif. EDITORIAL Fly The Flag Independence Day Independence Day, 1962. Wednesday, Nevada City will celebrate an "old-fashioned" Fourth of July in honor of Independence Day We are pleased to note that many resios ; NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET Published Every Wednesday By NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET, INC, 132 Main St., Nevada City, Calif. dents of the community have already decoratedin patriotic theme, including the flying of Old Glory. While we have never believed in blind patriotism or extreme nationalism, we share with most Americans the pride in our country andits accomplishments as a free nation, It is refreshing to see a city where the stars and stripes are fluttering in the summer breeze, especially since this holiday is intended to honor our nation's founding. We urge residents who have not yet planned to join in the celebration to do so by flying the flag on the Fourth. Nation's Progress Chief ‘62 Issue By Senator Vance Hartke (D. -IND. ) Chairman, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Two years ago, President Kennedy, then a Senator campaigning for the-highestoffice im the land; tofd the American people the chief issue was whether America was to begin moving forward again. Wehave, indeed, begun to move ahead, Wearecharting bold newcourses. Government is showing new leadership:to a people starved for leadership. Next November thechief election issue will be whether the American poeple approve of this leadership, these programs and the new forw ard movement of our Nation and our society. By election day Congress will have approved a new welfare program designed to get rid of chiseling and to help people helpthemselves, some kind of hospitaliza— tion plan for our aged, a program to retrain workers, whose old skills are no longer needed,a new farm plan designed to cut down on surpluses, a new tax plan, a trade program and dozens of other worthy projects and programs. In concert with the Administration we will have stepped up-our-defense andtlaid-out-new-paths for-cooperation with strong allies, Today we find few such alternatives offered by the minority, We find no constructive opposition, It appears that Republican candidates next fall will fall back upon scare words and labels. In the main, they will criticize, but offer no alternatives. In some cases, the voters will be offered an opportunity to decide between ideologies. There will be a stand-pat Republican running against a move-forward Democrat, There willbe a Birch Society backer versus a middle-of -the-roader. In every state voters'will have an opportunity to express their satisfaction—or disapproval--of appointments made by this Administration. Usually these appointments by the Administration come from recommendations of members of the Senate or the House, They are postmasters, judges, district attorneys, farm program managers and, sometimes, directors of agencies such as Small Business Administration and Federal Housing Administration. Finally, judgment canbe passed indirectly on the President and his programs, In many races next fall, opposing candidates will line up for and against President Kennedy and his programs, President Kennedy's actions in foreign affairs, in defense matters, in fighting unemployment and poverty, in attacking the source of inflation whenasteel price rise was a fact, in providing true leadership--all these will be brought intothe campaign. Those who remained silent while big business attempted to begin a new inflationary spiral, for instance, may be called to account for themselves. T he voters’ decisions will profoundly affect not only the products of the next Congress, but the course of the Nation, They will set the stage for the next Presidential election. And, by their choices of people and parties, they willendorse or reject progress, programs, and projects as well as personalities, Local Restaurants In New Mobil Guide NEW YORK CIT Y---Points wt of tourist interest that attract visitors to Nevada City and adjacent areas are singled out for mentioninthe new, 1962 edition of the Mobil Travel Guide. Defending freedom is a job for all Americans. You can do your share by buying U. S. Savings Bonds through the payroll savings plan where you work, or at any Rio, Montez, Eastern spots. Nugget of July 5. Dear Sir: What has happened to "Odd Bodkins" ? We have missed it's original humor and subtle satire the last few weeks. We hope to see it back soon. A mature paper such as the Nugget needs a bit of mature humor. Yours, Mr. and Mrs. James Grant Dear Sir: Let's All Fly Our Flag on July Fourth! ! “Everybody's Doing It" lately. In keeping with the good Old T ime Fourth of July Spirit of our coming Nevada City celebration there's quite a movement toward the sort of festive, patriotic flag display we used to thrill to on National Holidays, What a tonic to the spirit and a togetherness this created! Quoting the Nugget's editorial of April 18 “start planning now to create a ‘public image’ of Nevada City that will draw tourists" which holds, of course, for Grass Valley as well. Here is a prime opportunity for us all to appear to the best possible advantage, Why not help to set the patternin your neighborhood by flying your Flag ahead of time to encourage others to do likewise ?! But, be sure that you take it in at night! and let's see the Old Timers and Newcomers compete to
fly the most Flags! this can be fun, and so effective and rewarding. ibank, The Editor Letters To The Editor CRAYOW CORNER "My School and Friends" by Irene Ross, Age 8 Second Grade Bell Hill School Bob Paine is taking a vacation from Lola Black Bart, the NCNGRR, and other various and sundry local history. He left Nevada City on June 22, 1962 to sail fromSF to Macau, Singapore and Thailand to be the Nugget's reporter in those Far He will return to NC Aug. 6. His newcolumn series will start in the A Flagless Public has been the charge against Americans!!! Comparatively few have displayed The Flag at homes and less than 1% of all American merchants fly The Flag at their places of business, Thisis a sad commentary. Why is this the case? I know that John Glenn spoke forso many Americans when he said, in his speech before Congress: "---I am certainly glad to see that pride in our Country and its accomplishments is not a thing of the past. I still get a hard-to-define feeling inside when the Flag goes by-andI know all of youdo, too. Today, as we rode up Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House and saw tremendous outpouring of feeling on the part of so many thousands of our people, I got this same feeling all over again. Let us hope that none of us ever loses it," At this time special credit should be given tothe Nevada City Elks Lodge which gave 750 Flags to the school children before Flag Day, This did much to promote a patriotic spirit in the hearts of the children, As an example, a neighbor of ours, whose boy came home proudly bearing his gift Flag, had to go straight to town to buy Flags for the younger children, suc was the excited demand, Other organizations are also _speaking out for Greater Flag Display, such as the Nevada County Republican Women, SIERRA BYWAYS eS BY DEAN THOMPSON BACK TO THE FAIR, .. Century 21 is basically a science fair, Many exhibits are either entirely or partially devoted to science, If a person were to absorb all that is displayed, he or she could leave the fair with a good education in sciences. But because most of these displays do not make the best advantage of visual aid principles, the education offered can only be captured by concentration and much “reading. Have you ever tried to read and absorb in the midst of a milling crowd? ‘ MORE ABOUT LODGING, . ."How is Expo-Lodging working out, " we asked... "It's working fine," the press representative for Expo-L onthe Century 21 staff told us. "We had the largest weekday crowd of the fair (nearly 75,000 people)’ yesterday, and Expo-Lodging was able to take care of all requests for reservations."...There you have the official answer, We knew of Expo-L's work on the day before. We had decidedto test the contention that Expo-L can take care of you on little or no advance notice...On a Monday afternoon from the Sheraton Portland, we made reservations in the hopes of finding whether preferential space was given because of the origin of the request,—All-reservations gothrough Expo-L except those made direct with hotel or motel in Seattle. Reservations were not confirmed that night, although Expo-L is supposed to be on an 18hour day ending at midnight. The reservation had not been confirmed at:10 a.m. the next morning, although space had been designated for us at the Randolf Apts. inSeattla Confirmation came at 11 a. m., with arrival time in Seattle designated at 2 p.m. (as we had originally indicated)... However, itwasa good four hours to Seattle, so enroute we called the number given for the Randolf Apts..... "I'm so glad you called, Mr, Thompson," we were told by the girl who answered by phone number and Daughters of the American Revolution, Grass Valley Elks, Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, The Republican Women have boxed flag sets for sale to be used outdoors on house or porch (with metal bracket phone 273-3843) as well as other gift flags and the following merchants in both cities stock regulation outdoor Flags: both Alpha Hardware Stores, William's Stationary (G, V.), Gallagher's Save More Variety Store (N.C,) Coast to Coast Stores (G.V.), and Brust Variety (G:V.). Why nottreat yourself to a new 50 star Flag of the United States NOW! Here's toa Bigger and Better Fourth! Dorothy B, Sanders, Flag Chairman (Mrs, Stanley. A.) Nevada County Republican Women not by apartmentname, "Youhave been placed in another: apartment house---Margola Apartment..." By phone we changed arrival time to 4 p.m, and asked whether the apartment was first class as we had requested... When we arrived, at precisely 4 p.m., we found Margola Apartment---a well-kept brick exterior apart ment---on a street with impossible parking facilities. The street had nothing but apartments, with an average of two parking spaces is front of each apartment. The interior was old, but clean. There was no ele¥Vator to "our" second story apartment, The apartment included a bedroom large enough for the double bed, barely; a sparsely furnished living room with a studio couch; a bath room with old fashioned tub discolored with years of use. Seven of the 15-units were occupied on a monthly basis. We objected tba three-day stay and consideredonenight..,.The manager said she could not grant that (wanting full payment $54 in advance for the three days) unless her boss, who alsoranthe Randolf, would approve,...We talked with her boss by phone. She asked why we.were not satisfied. We told her we had requested first class accommodations and did not consider that this filled the bill. She suggested a reduction in the rate. The apartmentiseemed even less attractive at that point, so we left to find a motel at 5° p.m. onthe heaviest weekday in the fair's history to that date....I haye wondered whether Margola Apartment is even on the Expo-L list of approved apartments. I have also wondered why such apartments as these seem to be getting reservations while motelrooms are available north of the fairgrounds within a short driving distance. Why the AAA and other organizations continue to use Expo-L when their members frequently get this type of treatment from Expo-L even when reservations are made weeks in advance is beyond our understanding. .. . To those of Century 21 who feel Expo-L is doing such a good job, we would suggest they spend some nights in the accommodations they are using for tourists from around the world, We found lodging ina motelafter5 p.m. on the busiest day of the fair... The motel wasnot one of the most modern, But it wasclean andwellrun, It was 15 minutes from fair parking. More on the fair in weeks to come. GOLD DISPLAY...Nevada City Lions will award this gold display as a prize Wednes= Donations will benefit the day at 5 p.m. Lions Project Fund.
