Simplify Medicare payment program It will be easier for. beneficiaries to pay doctor bills now because of a new simplified method for claiming Medicare benefits. This will be welcome news to many of the older residents of the Nevada City area who were finding it difficult to submit a claim under the old method. There were two ways under the old method for older people to get their doctor bills paid through Medicare. The first called for the doctor agreeing to claim the 80% payment directly from Medicare by filling out a very simple one-page application form, The second required that the beneficiary first pay the bill and then apply for the Medicare payment, with or without the help ofthe doctor. It was this second way that was causing beneficiaries throughout the country a great deal, of trouble, During the first year and a half of Medicare, about half of the claims for doctor bills were sent in directly by the doctors. The remaining half were filed by the beneficiaries themselves who first had to pay the bills. The systerh worked well enough in the sense that almost $1.3 billion were paid in benefits on claims submitted, Congress took a hard look at this problem and came up with a third method in its recently passed legislation, Beginning January 1, 1968, the only thing a beneficiary needs to submit for a doctor bill claim is an itemized bill. The bill no longer has to be receipted as in the past. In plain language, the bill does not have to be paid before filing a claim. This makes it much easier for a beneficiary to pay his doctor bills, All he needs now is the properly itemized bill. Of course, the assignment to the doctor still remains the simplest method, for all concerned, More than 8,000 persons were on hand to celebrate the Fourth of July in Nevada City which presented a° program replete with parades, stage play, beautiful girls, and just about everything else to make up a joyous occasion. The day was announced by the
traditional dynamite explosion atop Sugar Loaf, and from then on it was Independence Day all of the way, with the Paradeof Pioneers starting down historic Broad Street at 10:30 a.m. The night before, Lynn Pe‘terson had been crowned Goddess of Liberty. Runnersup were Michelle Mautino and Barbara Heilman in that order, The top theater attraction, "The Music Man", started on Wednesday evening and con, cluded a highly successful stand Saturday night at the Old Nevada Theatre with its all-local cast. Proceeds go toward restoration of the theater. Nevada City and California Division of Forestry firemen soaked each other to a draw in a water fight at the Plaza, but the foresters sneaked through to beat the NC laddies by 1-1/2 seconds in the hose cart race. The Nevada City volunteers came back to take first place in organizational floats in the parade, their "Stamp Millin Action" getting the judges' nods, Other first in the parade went to Paine and Wallis, Sing Lee Laundry, family group; Lower Lake Fire Department from Clear Lake, old fashioned fire truck, commercial; Preston School of Industry, band; Nevada City Girl Scouts, marching units; Nevada County Junior Horse‘men, mounted groups; and Maryanne Crom, individual horse group. Howard Wilcox for the third time took honors for the longest whiskers in the Whiskerino contest. Benny Gonzales won top award for the most unusual beard; Carl Barnes was judged the man with the sexiest beard, and Raymond Selvester, 15, was handed a prize for the most pitiful attempt.
