Patient And Anxious
The recreational use of water is discussed in a feature article elsewhere in
in today's NUGGET. The author is well
qualified to speak of recreational and other
water problems, being the director of the
California Department of Water Resources,
William E. Warne.
We are encouraged to note Warne's conClusion:
"So we see anew use, recreational use,
entering the arena of water planning. It has
already beenrecognized in California law.
Already ways of defining its rights, needs,
and limits are being incorporated in regulations and plans."
The water resources director indicates
a knowledge of the recreational problems
that are now facing California. He has indicated that ways and means are in the offing for solving such problems.
Warne mentions a need for patience to
allow time for integration of recreational
needs into the state water program.
While we all must agree that patience
is now arequirement, we should also note
that the problem has existed for some years
and the state is only now recognizing the
need, :
Patient we shallbe. But patience will be
tempered with a requirement of state officials that they proceed now with haste.
We in Nevada County are seeing new
dams in the immediate offing, and we do
not see action to bring recreational use to
them upon completion. We also have many
lakes in the high Sierras that have great
recreational possibilities..if they are
still available when a state water-recrewives plan is in —

Sheriff Wayne Brown and Chief of Police J J Jackson
have served notice on Bob Wyckoff, the Broad Street
photographer that the police cannot be held responsible
for the safety of the invaluable collectors items of extremely rare value that Bob displays in his photo shop
window. They have suggested that he wire the window
with a special burglar alarm system or hire his own guard.

The other day Judge Verle Gray had in
his court a tourist from New Jersey charged
with going through a red light. Verle,
a little curious, asked the tourist how
come he was in NC. Said the traveller he
was riding down hiway 40 when suddenly
he saw NC 28 miles at 20-40 junction. His
memory went back 9 years ago when he remembered a two page picture spred ina
New Jersey metropolitan daily featuring
NC with clothes across the streets miners
clothes lines to celebrate the 4th of July.
Now that must be quite a town thought
the tourist gotta visit it. So he came to
the National’ Hotel stayed a week and
spent over $200 locally. What happened to
the red light violation I don't know.
Ruth who is the official bird watcher in this family has

towhee, killdeer, California thrasher and the western
tanager. How are you doing with your bird watching?

But the strangest burial place was the mummy cemetery in Guanajuato, Mexico, For those with a strong
stomach, this isa macabre visit. A tombstone is moved
in the center of the lawn and youclimb und d down

families of the deceased and you see row after row of rented graves all deepunderground but with walking aisles

rent? We saw stacks of mummies those whose rent
wasn't payed and were "evicted" from their last resting
place.

He has wrestled for the big money at

Dear Sirs;
My sister sent me a clipping of your paper--all about
this little NCNGR, I shall
never forget my first experience on this little train.
My husband had to goto
South America on business
so he told me to take the
children and go to visit my
sister, Grace Raymond, in
Nevada City.
Soltook my daughter and
son and on our arrival at Colfax toride this little train to
Nevada City we were all so
thrilled. It isa memory
never to be forgotten by us
all,
Later years, my daughter
married and living in Melbourne, Australia, came to
visit bringing her little three
year old son. We stayed at
the National and every evening Dr. Tickell would take
little d'Auverque to see this
. . little train "come puffing in”,
Dr, would hold d'Auverque
up in his arms and needless
to say I enjoyed it too!?
Now this little son has
grown to be a fine man and
I am so proud of him, I
think the family remembers
seeing this little train--for
it was a real live toy.
I am “giving r my copy to
my son Milton Masters, a
grad of Nevada City High
School, but now living in
Ventura, California. Weoften speak of those days.
Those years at High were his
happiest days. Those days
we had a more freshness of
vision, amore vital sense of
life.
Wealllove Nevada City,
it is home to my sister,
Would it be possible for
you to mail a copy of your
Nugget with this article by
Bob Paine about the NCNGR
to my grandson
Thank you very much,
