At The Democratic
Convention
By Alfred Heller
DATELINE CONVENTION HALL, Los Angeles---We
drove into Los Angeles from the West and there hovering
over the scrawny skyline, looming through the smog and
magnified by the smog, the moon seemed fantastically
huge.
That is L.A. for you.
life.
Like the moon, the separate events of this Democratic
convention loom all out of proportion to the ordinary
observer:
.-A cocktail party for 7,000 people, a brunch for
9,000.
. A noisy squabble in the California caucus room,
. Shouting mobs of so-called volunteer workers in
the Biltmore Hotel, paid at the going rate of $1 an hour,
Even the moon is bigger than
chanting "We'reFor Stu, He's For You"---"All The Way
With L.B.J."---"Make A Din For Stevenson" ---"Back
Jack."
-The applause and shouting in the bunting draped
corridors.
.The angry chase and capture of a newsman who
had bugged a California caucus by placing a miniature
tape recorder and camera in an air vent above Governor
Brown's head. The tape was destroyed.
. The heart-shaped platitudes and the almost palpable will to. win in November,
’ AT SOME POINT every delegate and every observer
must ask himself, what is bigger than life and what is
real? Anda Nevada Countyman can ask, what does this
convention have to do with Nevada County and what does
Nevada County have to do with the convention?
Congressman Bizz Johnson of Roseville gave me a partial answer.
He said, “The people-of Nevada County should know
that they are represented here through me and the other
Second District delegates. We know their problems and
we have spoken to many and know how they would like ”
us to vote,” :
But Judy Conley of Chico, the prettiest alternate at the
convention, isn't so sure, She is wearing a straw hat
marked “uncommitted. "
She said, "I'm listening and learning. "
I also talked with Senator Stan Arnold of Susanville
and Elizabeth Reginato of Redding, people from our district with plenty of horse sense and a desire to vote according to their consciences, Senator Ron Cameron of
Auburn is also here as an observer.
Then-there is the delegation chairman, Senator Clair
Engle, who has many Nevada County friends. I have
seen his hard-boiled sarcasm act like a whip keeping
emotional trouble-causers in line at California delegation caucuses,
It isthese people from our district and others like them
from every other district of the United States who see
through the smog and haze and bring the convention into
proportion,

May I tell you about our experience in your city on
We arrived in town about 9:45 a.m. and after checks
ing the street for “No Parking” signs and finding only
the regular ones stating “Sundays and Holidays Excepted,” we parked our car and left to see the parade,
then later returned to find the car had been stolen, or
so we tought until we approached the police officer
orner, who told us we’d probably find it in
i’s Garage up on Sacramento Street.
the long, hot climb up the hill, the young man
in thé garage informed us it wasn’t there but still farther on up the hill in someone's yard and that he couldn’t release it until his boss returned from /another tow
By this time we were slightly agitated, so we
called the police, A long. heated disctssion followed
during which we learned that the towing of cars from
Progress Citizens

this community who would .
like to see Nevada City take

He noted that co-operation
with organizations such as

when it comes to matters of
mutual interest. "
"We will need all the

Borate
Plane
, Crashes
Robert Schacht, 34, Grass
Valley, received face and
head lacerations when he
crashlanded his borate plane
in the river bed of the Middle Yuba, Monday afternoon
about 5 p.m., during fire
fighting operations at Weaver
Lake.
Schacht was on his way to
the fire with a load of borate
when both motors of his plane
conked out. He dumped his
load and notified the other
planes by radio that he was
in difficulty and was hunting
' for a place to set down.
The forest service was notified and immediate plans
were made for evacuation of
the pilot. Dr. B. W. Hummult
Nevada City and pilot Ed
Beaumont, Stockton, left
Loma Rica in a copter to go
into the crash area, Fortunately, the copter was able
to set down very close to the
crashed plane and first aid
was given the injured man.
He was returned to Sierra
Nevada Memorial Hospital
where he is recovering. This
marked the first official use
of the landing pad at the hospital,
The fire covered ap‘proximately 25 acres of timber and brush, andwas
located about 40 miles north
east of Nevada City. The
cause is believed to be an
abandonded camp fire. Fifty
fire-fighters; three. dozers
and borate planes were used
to control the fire.
The borate plane lost one
wing, thetail assembly and
both motors in the crash.
