TRADE WINDS by-Bob Wolden, — Sad to say, but I'm leaving-truly, this tyme. e@eee8¢e So, I asked this honey out to dinner. . . told her we'd go to Jack's, She looked marvy, hair up to here, dress front down to here, frou-frou juice behind the ears... we stopped at the National for cocktails, then on to G.V. She made a comment when we passed Town Talk, not realizing she was going to Jack Blevin's Foster Freeze, @eese2e Main in Grass Valley. Miss Dodini graduates this month from Mt, St. Mary's Academy in Grass Valley and will major in French at UCD after compiling an A-minus average in high school, Town Talk Nevada County Nugget...July 13, 1966.. 3 Political Ploy...Airport Moves ...Plastic Santas...Big Summer Ronald Reagan has received the nod from the Grass Valley Jayceesto be the luncheon speaker at the state board meeting this month in Grass Valley, but it was Govemor Brown who advanced theconstruction date of the Grass Valley segment of the freeway. There was no small amount of scoffing when the Governor stood before a big local audience in the Nevada City Elks Club hall a few months ago and pledged to use all fhe influence of his Office to get the freeway project advanced, Grass Valley leaders and merchants went to see highway officials in Sactamento and were told it would be 1970 or 1971 before work could start and only then if everything broke right and the money was available, The Grass Valley group returned and started gathering statistical and pictorial ammunition with which to bombard the California Highway Commission at a formal hearing that was to be scheduled for late last month, The Grass Valley bomb was ready to be dropped, but the audience with the commission was never scheduled, ‘The reason came out late last week when state Public Works Director John Erreca informed Senator Paul Lunardi that it would not be necessary to appear before the commission because the planning program had been reviewed at the request of the governor and the. start of work on the project had been advancedtothe latter part of next year, Ronnie will have to make quite a speech totop that accomplishment with the people who have to buck the Grass Valley traffic five days a week. e*eees Since the first expenditure of exploratory_money to see what it would take to turn the Nevada City Airport into an airport again and the resulting suggestions from the council table and the man on the street that the project was a waste of money, not much more has been said about the airport, or the several thousand dollars still kicking around in the airport fund, And while on airports, Supervisor Henry Loehr who represents the eastern end of the county last week registered strong opposition to budgeting funds for more improvements to Loma Rica County Airport. He contended that the people in the eastern end were already being
taxed to support the airport there which is operated by an airport district. He suggested that Loma Rica be put on the same basis. It is doubtful that anything will come of this suggestion and is questionable even if Loehr was serious or just putting the annual airport budget opposition into the record, eees#s An idea that could have given Nevada City another unique feature was sent to the scrap heap Monday night when the city council approved a Chamber of Commerce request for $500 for Christmas street decorations, A few years ago, the merchant's committee of the Chamber came up with the idea of using individually decorated trees outside of each store and promoting Nevada City as the Christmas Tree City. The idea worked, the city looked very . much different than any other around and the seasonal merchant's promotions were a success, Astimewenton, it was harder to find trees, harder to find merchants who wanted to participate in the program and even harder to find people who wanted tohelp put them up on the store fronts, decorate them and then, remove them at the end of the season. Last year the effort was spotty and now the idea has apparently been abandoned. Now the town that could have been the Christmas Tree City, is apparently headed in the direction of becoming just another one of the thousands of plastic Santa cities, e*eee#es In the east, talk of a long hot summer means talk and fear of social and racial unrest in the big cities, but Nevada County could have its own long hot summer of a different sort this year. Already in the offing is a petition to recall three of five members of the Pleasant Ridge School District Board of Trustees. Before the summer is over, businessmen and residents in the Hills Flat area are going to have to do some hard thinking about which way they want to jump to solve the ‘sewage pollution problems of the area. Water, the treatment, delivery and cost will become increasingly more important as the summer moves on, The State Health Department will continue to press the Nevada . Irrigation District to get moving on a master water treatment system forthe Twin Cities urban area and the NID will continue to press the cities to make committments to participate in buying the treated water and therefore helping to pay for the new facilities, The cities will probably continue to do a lot of hedging before making such a move that will put the NID in sole control of the water supply. Nevada City will take a hard look at any way it can get out from under dependence on the NID forwater and Grass Valley, will also at least talk about looking for ways to find their own water. While Grass Valley has settled on the temporary solution of some portables and some classes in the old junior high school, the school district's long range housing problems are not solved, The housing problems of the High School District are still not solved and at the rate the project to enlarge the Ridge Road plant is moving, itwillbea long time before they are, At the current rate of growth and the current rate of action on the addition, an addition to the addition may be needed before work on the addition starts, With the news that work on the Grass Valley segment of the freeway is scheduled for next year, the city can start bracing itself for the kind of disruption, dislocation and uncertainty that Nevada City has been facing for several months, There are some rumblings from various parts of the county, as there always are at this time of year, of investigations of the tax assessor’s office, A lot of people who have not had a reassessment of their property for several years have had their taxes take a big leap up and are now feeling the bite they. should have felt some ‘time ago, It is going to be an active and a long hot summer. eoeees?
