Fire badly
damages home
in Nevada City

on Aristocracy Hill in Nevada
City caught fire Monday evening from an unknown cause,
Mrs, Briggs told Norman Oates. of the Nevada City public
works that she was on the telephone when she heard what
sounded like an explosion, She
went out onto her patio and saw
flames licking up the wall,
A neighbor started spraying
water from. a. hose... _ the:
flaines which were wee as if”
from a. wind tunnel, A partition on the upper floor of the
home built in the 1800s acted as
a wind tunnel sending flames
shooting out both sides of the “
partition and up the roof,
Three trucks and 31 volunteers
from the Nevada City Fire Department answered the 5:22 p,m,
fire call and worked for nearly
three hours to bring the fire
under control, :
_ Fireman Al Murray was injured when broken glass cut his
arm, He was taken to the hos.
pital for a few stitches needed
to close the cut.
Policeman Gunter Wolf, who
had been directing traffic around
the fire trucks, was called to
another police matter when he
began to have chest pains, The
45-year-old policeman was taken to Miners Hospital where he
rémains "in fair condition" this
morning,
Smoke damage to the Briggs
home was considerable, Oates
said, with the laundry and patio
wall burned. The home has been
open to the public for benefit
house tours and has been viewed
by hundreds of local people and
