. Nevada County Nugget July 15, 1965. ‘ ciate, a sunset--those to wnom growth is progress and progress is good, regardless of its direction--those to whom money is the single standard against which all else must be measured, California has been hacked and battered by the forces of ignorance and greed, and is today being forced in a direction that few would want to travel if they could see what lay ahead, So it is that in California one sees not only the consequence of unplanned, careless, or deliberately destructive past activity; one also gets the feeling that the worst is yet tocome, There are times when the change without apparent direction, and the growth without control, give the appearance of socially acceptable madness, of a human population irruption that may well end tragically both for the people and for the land. --Raymond F, Dasmann, from his new book, "The Destruction of California. " WASHINGTON -CALLING KUCHEL CASE UNCOVERED THE PLOT OF THE RIGHT WASHINGTON, --One of the nastiest attempts at character assassination in a long time has been disposed of as expeditiously and as painlessly as possible. Three of the defendants indicted for criminal conspiracy to libel Sen. Thomas H. Kuchel (R., Calif.) in effect pleaded guilty to the charge and submitted letters of abject apology confessing they had made use of an affidavit wholly false in its allegation of drunkenness and homosexuality. Having endured the ordeal of publicity and the grand jury inquir y Senator Kuchel will not have to go through the further punishment of testifying in a lengthy trial. Thanks to his determination to see it through and to the effective work of the district attorney's office in Los Angeles, he emerges stronger politically than he was before. But if this is a fortunate ending it is no reason why the whole sordid episode should be swept under the rug. Foran examination of the lengthy record before . the grand jury indicates that this was a rather crudely contrived plot by the extremist right to destroy Kuchel, a liberal-moderate and the only demonstrated votegetter in the party in California, Having removed him, the way would be open to put over Ronald Reagan for the governorship and control of the state with the same protective coloration that enabled another actor, George Murphy, to be elected to the U.S, Senate, Kuchel is now being urged to run for Governor by leaders Of influential groups, including the trade unions. He is in the California, middle-of-the-road tradition of his long-time friend, Chief Justice Earl Warren. Warrenis -he only man in the state's history to be re-elected to a third term as Governor, SMALL TOWN : SMALL WORLD Barcel iets BaelY aes! iA teers aye arn Whether with four more years of his Senate term to run Kuchel will make the race is uncertain. In the libel conspiracy he has had a bitter taste of how far the extremists will go. The primary fight would be rough and California's oil and other newly rich tycoons would pour out money for Reagan. In this instance he was able to knock down the big smear. Butin view of recent Supreme Court decisions goveming libel, notably in the case of city officials of Birmingham, Ala., brought against The New York Times, thereis a question whether men in public life have any protection against libel, even though it be deliberate libel. Decent citizens fearful of the techniques of character assassination will think several times before venturing to seek public office. One of the defendants in the Kuchel case, Frank A. Capell, has just brought out a book that combines every known variety of smear. Called "Treason is the Reason,” it is so full of demonstrable falsehoods as to be ludicrous ifit were not such a sad commentary on the gullibility of the audience Cappell expects to reach, As an example the author cites a report that J, Edgar Hoover had approved of the appointment of Adam Yarmolinsky as his successor as head of the FBI, Yarmolinsky was a special assistant to Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara who later was at odds with Democratic leaders in the House over a job in the poverty program. Capellreproduces the facsimile of a letter from the FBI head in which Hoover says: “You may be sure there is no truth to the rumor concerning my choice of a successor and it is my desire to remain in my present capacity as long as I can be .of service to my country, It is my earnest hope that my future endeavors will continue to merit your support and approval," In addition to raking up all the old charges out of the past Capell gives a list of 28 names of high-ranking American diplomats, many of whom have served under Republican and Democratic administrations over the years, whom he alleges are Soviet intelligence agents. The legal counsel for the State Department found that ‘the book contained one libelous statement after another, Buttotake legal action would only give the book publicity and the outcome would be in doubt. To laugh offsuch wild exaggerations is easy enough. Butifrepeated often enough and particularly in times of tension and national peril they can gain credence,
That was one of the most sinister aspects of the rise of Nazism. Hitler understood the technique of the big lie, as he openly boasted, Again and again, as the tragedy of the Weimar Republic drew to a close, decent and well-meaning men were destroyed by deliberate smears against whichthey found themselves defenseless, (Copyright 1965) ---Marquis Childs LETTER TO THE EDITOR TRIBUTE TO JOHNSON To the Editor: Almost all of the employees of the Nevada County Hospital have tried to convey some of their feelings tothe recent administrator, Mr. Clifford Johnson. It seems appropriate that the residents of the County be aware of the significant contribution.Mr. Johnson made to the County Hospital. We would be pleased if you would publish the following letter. ie Thank you, David J. Hosbein, M.D. Dear Mr, Johnson: We are sorry that you have left the Nevada County Hospital, The hospital gained purposeful direction when you came, The extent of your contribution is difficult to measure but by your total personal involvement in our hospital you have left us many good things. Wenow have a well equipped, properly located and ample sized emergency room, We now have an efficient X-ray department where our new consulting radiologist can work with ease, He hasan adequate reading room and the films are catalogued and accessible. The maternity and newborn wards have been moved to larger areas nearer necessary nursing facilities. We now have a labor room and a delivery room of adequate proportions, We have two new nursing stations centrally located in the patient areas with appropriate call systems, Our kitchen facility has been consolidated and renovated to provide efficient wholesome food preparation, Youdeveloped a more efficient system of providing employees meals along with a pleasant dining area, We now have several new storage areas with adequate shelf space and proper cataloguing of supplies. The student nurses, we are sure, thank you for personally cleaning the floor of their new classroom one evening last winter, Wenow havea drug formulary to help us through the pharmaceutical maze, Our new drug room is better located and dependably stocked, Our laundry is done off the premises because you found that this would provide better service at less expense, Wenow have a new outpatient area with a generous sized waiting room, several examining rooms and a separate parking lot, And now we havea womens auxilary to help us meet our patient needs, But this list doesn 't even suggest the many procedural changes which makes our work easier and more efficient in such areas as bookkeeping, patient accounts and inventory control, Changes donot come easily or without cost but with imagination and good management we have seen these changes occur within the structure of the hospital using, for the most part, the skills available at the hospital plus Undersheriff Gallino's free work force. Gifts such as the entire X-ray developing equipment have been welcomed but have not come without your constant awareness of the needs of the hospital, Needless to say, you have left usa generous legacy forwhichweare grateful, We are sorry that you cannot continue your work here but we shall try to carry on along the lines you have indicated, Our best wishes, ~ Your friends at the hospital, TODAY S BOUGHT AN ELECTRIC TRAIN S6T, h FOOTBALL, AW ChPGUNS, AND Ls ~ CRN -THIATY FOR w \ COMIC BOOKS . ! kop ODD BODKINS..
