January 17,1973 Taxpayers will get state ‘income refund For the first time, California wage earners have had all or a portion of their State incgme tax withheld from their wagés. This could result in as many as 5 million taxpayers receiving State income tax refund checks this year, said Houston I. Flournoy, State Controller and Chairman of the Franchise Tax Boara. State income tax refunds will be processed in the same manner as Federal Internal Revenue Service refunds, he pointed out. ‘If a return shows an overpayment of tax and taxpayer has checked the box on the face of the return that. indicates he wishes it refunded, the process will be automatic,” said Flournoy. : Flournoy suggested that taxpayers prepare and file their returns early and offered the following suggestions to those who would like to receive their refund checks as early as possible. ‘‘Prepare your return carefully and use the preaddressed label sent with the tax booklets. : GeorgeSays: OUR USED CAR INVENTORY MUST BE REDUCED STOP IN AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOME . Grass Valley — 273-9535 LMON. thru SAT. = 8 to 6 ) VOLUME 49 10 Cents A Copy Published Wednesdays, Nevada City Thomas Mantle is ‘The Goldsmith” in NC area 244 Commercial St. in Nevada City The goldsmith’s art, and the craftsmanship which it requires, is an ancient and honorable one.a very professional calling which makes heavy demands upon talent and temperament. Not everyone who might be interested in or intrigued by it is qualified to essay work of this nature. _Thomas Mantle, ‘‘The Goldsmith’, opened his facinating shop at 244 Commercial street in Nevada City last August. There he is creating designs in gold and silver jewelry for custom and retail trade; utilizing these precious metals, and products of the Northern Mines area, in a most exciting way. And, says Mantle, ‘the local response has been highly gratifying,” He was graduated from several universities, including the University of Texas and the University of Missouri, as a history and _ anthropology Major..two subjects which led / to his present:: indirectly profession. : Four years ago he became a professional goldsmith after many years training with other craftsmen and jewelers; and for two years he was the propfietor of a similar establishment in the West Indies where he found:
much inspiration for many of his designs in jewelry. His decision to go into business locally stemmed from his enjoyment of this region as a summer visitor here. His brother has a cabin out on Red Dog, where Thomas frequently spent leisurely weekends. Using the cabin as headquarters, he had the opportunity to visit the many attractive areas and communities of Nevada County..eventually finding himself deeply ‘‘in love’’ with Nevada City and its potentials. He has not been disappointed in his selection of a_ business location. Mantle deals extensively with local rock-hounds, gem collectors and lapidaries for beautiful stones to use in his original gold and silver settings..the majority of which are exclusively handcrafted as differing from ‘“‘cast” works. He obtains precious stones from professional cutters and importers also..permitting a wide variety of selection for his clientel .. which he describes as “very discriminating in taste and ideas.’ “The Goldsmith” is currently displaying. some exquisite designs in engagement and wedding rings, pendants, bracelets, brooches, dinner and costume jewelry..all of which should readily serve to inspire his customers, He welcomes inquiries and ‘‘browsers’”’ ..communicates well in all matters and prefers to have several discussions with potential customers before designing pieces for eventual sale. Mantle hopes to have a working display at this year’s Nevada County Fair..which he considers one of the best Fairs in the country. He was particularly impressed by the magnitude of the gold collectioris on display at last year’s Fair; comparing it favorably with many he has viewed in the larger metropolitan art centers and museums across the United States. Another interesting facet of Mantle’s ‘‘trade’’ is his delicate repair of antique jewelry..a phase of the profession that not all such: shops provide on any appreciable scale. He will be happy to discuss any such problems with interested persons. “The Goldsmith” is open for business every day except Tuesday, from noon to 5 p.m. Appointments may be made for other times by calling 265-5709. C Mantle’s personal future involves obtaining a home place in this vicinity as soon as it can be arranged .-In his leisure hours he relaxes with his guitar and harmonica to indulge himself in a deep love for . good music..another expression of his artistic nature.
