oR SA ED YOU BET-RED DOG Hydraulic Diggings---A huge excavation that washed away part of You Bet and all of Walloupa. The Miners moved their houses, their churches and their meeting halls to Red Dog, then mined the former site. YOU BET---A building of emptyness, shadows TAILINGS ——_S— By Hollis Bentley Lazarus Beard built his place on high ground. From it you could see tothe north the gleaming bare cliffs of the Chalk Bluffs and to the south the diggings and buildings of Walloupa and Red Dog. He was well situated and well prepared to satisfy the miners" "dry" ---but the new place didn't have a name. When his first customers came, two miners, dusty, smelly and thirsty, free drinks made them a learned council on nomenclature. And these men, like the thousands of others, were suspended in life between various pasts and the future they hoped would begin any moment ina fabulous glory hole. And like those other thousands, Lazarus‘ two man council was not stupid, or foolish or overly honest. As they got to know their host they realized how to actively bring forth na:nes he would not like and so prolong the delightful situation. “Wellnow, how about Beardsville?" Jim would say, Lazarus shook his head. Beardstown, Kentucky was where Lazarus had come from and possibly the reason he was in the wild California mountains, “Lazarustown?” "No," Lazarus would look sad and pour whiskey into the empty glasses. "Thisis a mightly fine place,’ (Dee reteset renee serene tte eetntet te erst ret atrekrn eet tol 4 Lazarus And The Neologists sees Youbet,” saidBill; “You bet,” into thought. "You bet it is," Lazarus agreed. "It's gotta be the right kinda name---fittin’."” Bill said, twirled the whiskey in his glass and downed it in one swallow. “You bet," Lazarus nodded agreement. “Nothin’s happened in this spot yet,” Billsaid glumly, “like that Frenchman fellow losing his eye over at Gouge Eye and Red Dog burnin’ down all the time and W alloupa named for some Indian." Then he grinned, lifted his empty glass to be filled, “But things will happen here friend Lazarus, they ‘ll happen. " Lazarus reacted to this enthusiasm, “You bet,” he said emphatically. As this evening grew and Laz~arus' hospitality held the men became very concerned over their ‘task. They decided that for a place tobe a place it had to have a name and since this one had no name it couldn't yet be a place and if it wasn't a place it really couldn't exist. This kind of reasoning ona cold spring night that was so black through the small windows the world outside didn't seem tobe there at all exhausted the men into a drunken amiability. “Great whiskey”, said Jim.

And so, when the mines near Red Dog played out and the residents grew tired of rebuilding after each fire, those structures remaining afterthe last fire were removed to You Bet and the new towngrew to have 40 or 50 buildings and 13 cement mills within a radius of five miles.
