We indeed a ~ = attended were Mrs, Rudolf(Ilse) took our time but we really Grigoleit and her twodaughters, Monica and Susan, from Tahoe City; Mrs, Edward (Zoe) Schuckert from Nevada City; Mrs, Roy B. Willis from Georgetown; Mrs. _ George (Lydia) Gibbs and her grandaughter Becky Clifford from Chadsworth. Grigoleit is a former canoeing champion of Germany and was a great help. The canoe trip began on June 24 at the North Shore Coast Guard Station. The first ‘stop, Tahoe City State Park, was only one mile away from where we launched our canoes but it was far enough to get us broken in to what was really ahead of us. Other stops around the lake included Kaspian Nationa) Forest Camp, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Emerald Bay Boat Camp, South Lake Tahoe Recreation Area, Nevada State Beach Toyoiabe National Forest, William Bliss Acreage at Glenbrook Bay, Sand Harbor Beach Area, The Melin's private dock at Tahoe Vista, and then returning to Tahoe City State Park. The entire trip involved 72 miles of paddling but we did not push: our time. We extend our trip to 10 days because we wanted to do much more than canoe the lake. When we were camped at Emerald Bay we took a hike to Eagle Falls then on to Eagle Lake, we also took a tour of the Vikingsholm at Emerald Bay. While on our way to South Lake Tahoe Recreation Area we stopped at Taylor Creek and visited a fishery where we could see the creek life underwater. Pioneer Park Festival for children at A children's festival will be held in the picnic area of Pioneer Park on July 28. The festival is co-sponsored by the Children's Festival Committee and The Friends of the Library. It will feature a variety of booths. in creativity. Children will be encouraged to participate in soapstone carving, wood block construction, fold dying paper, wood pendants, paper lily (string) marbelizing paper, painting and building a castle, story-telling, stitching on burlap, chess, folk dancing, potter's demonstration, weaving and a pupet show. There will be wandering musicians and refreshments. : The Festival will have a medieval theme and there will be morning and evening sessions, Any funds made by the children will become their possession, : Anyone wishing to assist this program may contact chairman Pat Cobler, 273-0322, for its nicely proportioned superstr landscape and add interest to the structure. THE TUOLUMNE River Bridge on Highway 120 near Son ora, another American Institute of ucture and sculptured piers which blend well with the Steel Construction prize winner, was praised for its graceful sweep of line which fit beautifully into its setting and its clean, curving super piers provide space for expansion to fou structure and sculptured piers. California's prize-winning
bridges, . selected by the American Institute of Steel Construction both were designed by engineers in the bridge department of the California Division of Highways. The two are the Sacramento River Bridge at Bryte Bend on Interstate 880 just north of Sacramento, winner Highway Patrol commissioner Resignation of California Highway Patrol Commissioner Harold W. Sullivan was accepted today by Frank J. Walton, Business and Transportation Agency Secretary. Sullivan, who had Served as commissioner since January 1967, and will reach the Highway Patrol's mandatory retirement age in October, was appointed a member of the State Air Resources Board on July 7 by Lt. Governor Ed Reinecke, He will be succeeded by Deputy Commissioner Walter Pudinski. Pudinski, 45, is the first man to rise through Highway Patrol ranks to the top position, He is the Highway Patrol's seventh commissioner. A_ veteran of more than 20 years Highway Patrol service, he had been Deputy Commissioner since August, 1970. He was appointed to the Patrol in October, 1951, was promoted to sergeant in 1957, lieutenant in 1963, captain in 1964, inspector in 1967, and supervising inspector in July of 1970. As captain, he commanded the Sonora, Hollister-Gilroy and San Bernardino Areas, and while in‘ spector served as Deputy Zone Commander of Zone V, Los Angeles, The newly appointed commissioner received his baccalaureate degree from California State University at Sacramento, with honors, and is presently working toward a Master's Degree in public administration from the same university. He is an honor graduate of City College in San Francisco and also attended University of California at Berkeley, U.C, Extension in San Francisco and Cal Poly at San Dimas. His educational background includes graduation from a twoyear National Security Management course at the Armed Forces Industrial College, Ft, MacArthur, and he has been an instructor in police science and related subjects at various colleges, as well as within the highway Patrol. A New York native , Commissioner Pudinski served with the U.S, Coast Guard in World War IL, He and his wife, Dorothy reside in Sacramento, in the medium span, high clearance category; andthe Tuolumne -River Bridge near Sonora on Highway 120, winner in the medium span, low clearance category. Of the Bryte Bend Bridge, the AISC selection committee said, "It is a very pretty bridge. Its long spans, nicely proportioned superstructure and sculptured piers blend well with year's competition, AISC said there was an increasing trend resigns Their oldest son, Stephen, 21, will become a member of the California Highway Patrol when he is sworn in as an officer later this month, The Pudinski's have three other children, Linda 19, of Denver; Jenny, 12; and Lola, 8, As Commissioner, Pudinski will command an organization of almost 8,000 State employees, including 5,500 uniformed personnel and nearly 2,900 in civilian support positions, Sullivan, who was named to head the Highway Patrol when Governor Reagan began his administration, had risen through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department to become Deputy Chief of the Traffic Civision. His activities in the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the California State Peace Officers' Association, the California Council on Criminal Justice, and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators earned him an enviable reputation in the field of law enforcement. toward design simplicity combining form and function to satisfy the increasingly sophisticated tastes of the public. the landscape and add interest to this most.attractive structure. The designers, owners, general contractors and fabricators will receive award certificates. In commenting generally about the 133 bridges entered in this Community Players meet Thursday The Community Players’ monthly meeting will be held Thursday, at 8 p.m. at City Hall in Nevada City. Under discussion will be the variety show planned for the Nevada County Fair in August. Various acts have to be organized and technical help is needed.
