Volume 38, Number 27 — 10 Cents A Copy July 2, 1964 Or < Published Thursdays, Nevada City ——o ~~ ma Belle And Bull Kickoff Doin’s A “Belle of the Diggin's” and a “Bull of the Woods” will be crowned tomorrow night to rule over Nevada City 's July 4th activities, The crowning is scheduled for 8 p. m.-on Commercial Street between Pine and the Alpha gate. The queen will be chosen from five candidates on the basis of tickets purchased in her name for a drawing. First prize for the drawing will be a gold collection, Second prize isa shetland pony and third prize willbe a portable transistor radio. "Bull of the Woods” will be chosen from among those who registered for the contest. Earlier in the week a total of 22 had registered, Beards will be judged forthe longest, the most unusual andthe most colorful. Only those registered will be eligible for the "Bull of the Woods" title, but all others with beards may compete for the second and third nugget prizes. Following the judging a square ROY RALPH dance will be held in the area of the Post Office from 9 p.m. to midnight. Saturday willbe the big day in Nevada City with events scheduled from morning until late into the evening. The parade is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. At2 p.m. in Pioneer Park the fa mous hose cart race between Nevada City and Grass Valley firefighters will get under CANDIDATES for the title "Belle of the Diggin's” way. At 2:30 the firemen will go at it again in a game of water polo. Nevada City bartenders will getintothe act at 3:30 when they try for prizes in a race down Broad Street. A water fight and a money scramble for children have also been scheduled for the afternoon on Broad Street. JOHN Aw, Your Father's Moustache An ‘HOWARD d/Or Beard The anniversary of the independence of our nation will be marked this weekend in Nevada City with a gigantic celebration spiced with the flavor of the county's historic mining days. .The atmosphere has been set by the theme of the celebration “Doin's At The Diggin's. " Activaw ities will start tom orrow night with the naming of a “Belle of the Diggin’s” and “Bull of the Wood" and will continue through Sunday. The big event of every July 4th
celebration is the paradeand a big one will be staged here Saturday morning. As of Wednesday morning a total of 44 organizations; groups and individuals had signed up to participate. The parade route will start at the intersection of Broad and Cot~ tage Streets at 10:30 a.m, East Broad, West Broad and DownieNevada City School Budget Up $15,000 Nevada City School Board ap~ proved a tentative $328,400 budget at an adjourned regular meeting Monday night. This is up about $15,000 over last year. The increase comes from normal yearly step increases within the fram ew ork of theteacher salary schedule, hiring of one additional teacher as a combination third and fourth grade teacher, and replacing two buses. The tentative budget is based on the same tax rate as last year of $1.50 per $100 of assessed valuation. The next budget meeting will be on July 20 and the final budget hearing on August 3. The board approved increasing vacations for all full time classified personnel from 10 to 12 working days. Superintendent Edward Browning announced that second grader Greg White and third grade student Judy Moore had both received honorable mention certificates in the state-wide Keep California Green poster contest. ville Highway have been set aside for parking for parade participants, Paraders are asked to be in their assigned places not later than 9:30. The parade will come down Broad Street, turn left through the service station pass, up the short stretch of Highway 20-49°to Commercial Street, and-continue up Commercial to Broad Street and the dispersal areas.
