_Gilmore’s outdoor learning laboratory .
, i : : ll
Lyman Gilmore School in
Grass Valley is going to take
. advantage of what it is blessed
with"'-an abundance of land
contoured, sculptured and so
vegetative that it provides an
outdoor learning laboratory that
exceeds the fondest dreams of a
suburban school planner.
"Nature Walk" is the name the
students are using in building
. their outdoor site. The Grass
Valley Rotary Club has just
donated $100 to aid this project.
Beginning at the southwest
corner of the school building
is a gravel path which is used
by students living in the Brighton
Street area coming to and from
school,.The path leads to Condon Park,
Approximately 150 feet from
the school, a natural path leads
to a ‘scenic: spot at the bottom
of a ravine. Students from science classes have already
cleared and leveled this area for
a future picnic site which will
include benches and tables.
This area is proposed as a
starting point for "Nature Walk"
and is presently called Serenity
Ravine,
From Serenity Ravine, one
may proceed to the fence which
borders the back of the schéol
site. The walk along this fence
in a westerly direction provides
an opportunity to view trees,
shrubs and a variety of wildflowers in the spring.
Near the south end of the
grounds on an NID ditch, the
roar of a waterfall provides
a change of atmosphere.
Space and conditions are appropriate to the development of
a number of subplot areas. These
may be planned near classrooms
for convenience for teaching
various subjects.
Some courses which have been
suggested for indoor-out-door
learning are: bird study, weather
study, insect study, soil study,
plant study, water and water
life, mathematics, photography,
language arts and art.
The narrow ditch may be followed with an occassional crossing to the second gravel path
which provides access to the
school from Walker Drive.
