South Yuba Area Will Get High Recreation Use
Enormous recreation use growth
in the Nevada City District of the
Tahoe National Forest was predicted this week _by assistant
district ranger, Bob Cron,
Cron was the speaker at the
g§¢€neral membership luncheon
meeting of the Nevada City
Chamber of Commerce in the
National Hotel.
He noted that man day use in
the district reached 108,000 in
1960, 126,000 in 1964 and are
projected for 268,000 in 1967 and
618,000 man days by the year
2000,
In the South Yuba River area,
Cron noted that about half the
property along the river was
owned by the government, but

Nevada City Finally Approves The
State Retirement Plan For Police

and police reorganization to pay
for the retirement plan.
Martz was asked if the members
of the police department knew
what they were getting into and
he said he had worked out all of
the costs for the men and they
knew that although they would
have to cut corners, they wanted
the plan.
City accountant Stan Howard
said he did not think that the
police would be able to live on
the salaries they would have left
after all the deductions were
removed and predictedthat two
months after the plan was adopted
they would be back asking for
~—~taises. He suggested the city find
a way to include raises now to
help make the plan work.
Both O'Neill and Barry said they
were convinced the city could
pay for the plan and O'Neill said
the matter centered on whether
the city wanted the plan or not.
Barry moved for adoption-of the
ordinance and O'Neill seconded
the motion. The motion was
given unanimous approval and
Jensen noted that the answer will
be "no" on all future requests for
money. .
The council then moved to increase the city salex tax take by
five per cent and notify the
county.
Martz, . speaking for the police
department, thanked the council
for its consideration,
“We're glad to do it,” Mayor
Arch McPherson replied. "I just
hope we don't go broke and if we
do that you willtake good care of
us,”

that most of it was too steep for
any large camp development.
Two main projects are now
planned, he said. One is the
Golden Quartz Camp just past
Canyon Creek, The work here is
scheduled forthe next fiscal year
if landtitle problems are cleared
up by December. This will include 25 camp units, seven picnic
units, water and sanitary facilities
and a swimming area.
The second project is Kelleher
Flat which will be a picnic and _
swimming area and will include
12 picnic sites. Work in this is
scheduled for next summer on
sanitary facilities. The rest will
be completed as money becomes
available.
The district staff is starting an
Only once
area recreation plan for the South
Yuba area this summer and it
should be completed by next
spring. This will map out projected and completed projects in
the area into one overall plan.
Two other areas are being considered for future development,
but both are south of the river and
would consider eXpensive
bridging.
Cron said that in order to develop the full recreational
potential of the South Yuba area,
both the government and the
private land owners would have
to provide recreation facilities.
Pete Edwards conducted the
meeting in the absence of president John Reed. He announced
that at the next general membership meeting on Aug. 16 in the
Victorian Room, Bob Paine,
chairman of the citizens committee for the county general
plan, will be the speaker.
