THE STRAIGHT-TALKING
FUZZY-MINDED IDEALIST
IS MISUNDERSTOOD BY MANY
We feel sorry for Mr. Goldwater, the
Republican Presidential nominee. We
really do.
Here every time he opens his mouth
he is. misquoted, misinterpreted, lied
about, and generally done in by the
press andTV. Thatis, according to Mr.
Goldwater or his enthusiastic supporters.
But we don't feel sorry for the Senator
because of this alleged maltreatment by
the press. We feel sorry for him because he seems constitutionally
(spelled with a small "c") unable to
make himself understood.
Perhaps he should be running for the
state department instead of the Presidency. But that's beside the point.
Could it be that some of the Senator's
recent angry jibes at the press merely
reflect his own sense of frustration at
being unable to communicate in the
American language? (The English language is, used only,.by foreigners or
Democrats .)
Take this matter of extremism. In his
acceptance speechthe Senator put it as
plain as the nose on your face: "Extremism in the defense of liberty is not
a vice..Moderation in the pursuit of
justice is not a virtue."
Now anybody should be able to understand that, it says here. That's why
when Mr. Goldwater was asked by a
Phoenix reporter exactly what kind of
extremism he was referring to, he answered, "You read the speech.” And
when he was pressed to say whether he
had beenreferring tothe right-wing John
Birch Society, he said, "You read the
speech, andif you can't understand it,
you don't deserve to be a reporter. "
July 23, 1964 That stupid press! Always trying to
raise a ruckus and confuse the issue!
But what issue? What did the
straight+talking Senator mean? General
Eisenhower was reportedly confused,
‘even after the Senator tried to set him
straight. Sen. Dirksen felt he needed an
explanation. Sodid George Romney. So
did the Editor-in-Chief of the Hearst
newspapers.
So do most of the American people,
we suspect.
Butsadly, it looks as if they will be
disappointed. For the Presidential can-didate who is renounedfor saying
exactly what he means turns out to be
a fuzzy-minded idealist--something he
himself professes to abhor.
IN THE FOOTHILLS VEIN
PATRIOTISM COMES IN
A WIDE VARIETY OF FORMS
We found it interesting to read in a recent news story
that Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce. President Dr.
Donald Garich found Nevada City's July 4th celebration
lacking and that he found it necessary to take it upon
himself to instruct the local merchants in patriotism.
Atthe meeting of the Chamber this month Garich presented a film strip “Our American Heritage” with the
introductory comment that Nevada City's "Doin's at the
Diggin's" did not have much to do with the message of
Independence Day and he thought his program would fill
the gap.
PerhapsifDr. Garich had not been so busy politicking
for U.R.O.C. during the parade he might have had the
time tonotice that people were celebrating and enjoying
Independence Day in their own ways.
Weare getting a little tired of the groups of so-called
experts who beat their chests, pat, themselves on the back
and proclaim “I ama patriot and if you don't believe me
then you are not patriotic. "

~ The parade of irate taxpayers continues to pass before
the board of supervisors, We are now hearing rumblings
from some of the larger rural landholders that agricultural zoning might be a partial solution to their plight of
increasing taxes and decreasing profits.
The idea is an interesting one for an agricultural zone
wouldtendto establish and hold down land prices within
the zone. It wouldalso tend, for the time being at least,
to guarantee open green space in the county, and finally
would helpto concentrate construction of subdivisions in
the urban areas where services are easier and more economical to provide.
All of these things would be of benefit to the farmer
and the general county taxpayer, but any idea of agricultural zoning should be considered in the light of the
proposed general plan of the county so the zoning could
be designed to the best interests of all county residents.

There were two wild and woolly meetings held in the
county recently under the auspices of the Nevada County
Taxpayer's Association. The main theme seemed to be
that the county was applying to the Housing and Home
Finance Agency for funds for a general plan and since
this is the same federal agency that administers the Urban Renewal program, the county is going to have urban
renewal,
It might be pointed out that the H.H.F,A, also administers the Federal Housing Administration or F,H.A.,
without which many county residents would never have
financed their own homes,
It might be further noted that Nevada City last week
hired a consultant to prepare an application to the Community Facilities Administration of the H.H.F,A. fora
preliminary planning loan to improve the city water system.
Finally it should be remembered that both Grass Valley
andNevada City some time ago agreed to participate in
the county general plan. ee
So, if is are to believe the Taxpayers Association's _
slick L.A. speaker's shaky reasoning, we are all in for
urban renewal. The only trouble with that argument is
that no governmental unit in the county has any plans
for urban renewal.

TheT axpayers Association, which has been, a loud opponent in recent years of any kinds of taxes from schools
tocourthouses, hasbeen strangely quiet on the new budget item of some $17,000 for a county counsel, Could
it be that the Taxpayers Association has its own candidate for the job and does not want to upset the apple
cart by stirring up the issue?

BEAUTY OF THE REDWOODS .
REVEALED IN POETRY
Let me lie beneath the Redwood trees
---Don Hoagland
And gaze uv toward the skies
Between the jutting branches
As they rise---and rise---and
rise.
Let me marvel at the majesty
Of trees which, straight and lean,
Have grown from hidden earthbound roots
To peaks of verdant green.
Let me look with lazy pleasure
At the brown and golden tips
Of branches where the blue birds
Stop torest betweentheir trips.
Let me contemplate the beauty
And the texture of the bark’.
And note the sunlit pinnacles
Above their shadowed dark.
Let me listen to the whispering
