1000 On Job
NID Yuba-Bear Project
35 Percent Complete
The Nevada Irrigation District's
$59 million Yuba-Bear River Development, with over a 1000 men
now onthe job, isnow 35 per cent
complete.
This was announced in the 13th
monthly progress re port for the
period endingJune 30 released by
porject engineers, Ebasco Services, Inc.
Of the approved project cost of
$59,481, 640, atotal of $18, 881,
220 had been ex pended to the
end of the period. An average’
work force of 1,009 men was on
the job.
In the Mountain Division, excavation is underway in the Jackson Meadows spillway and core
trench. Grouting has started on
the left abutment of the dam and
quarried rock is being placed in
the downstream zone of the dam.
Clearing of the reservoir site was
resumed during the period.
The contractor made good
progress on rehabilitation w ork
on the Bow man-Spaulding Conduit and water was delivered into
the 11 mile system as scheduled
on July1.
Bow mantunnel No, 2 excavation is within 30 feet of completion, portals were started for T unnels4 and 5 and excavation continued on the bench below Tunnel
2.
On the BearRiver section of the
project, the Dutch Flat flume intake tunnel concreting was com-~
pleted and flume crossings are
being constructed. Gravel drain
and core material is being placed
and the penstock intake was concreted at the forebay. Penstock
supports are 25 per cent complete,
the arch is being concreted and
foundation grouting is continuing
at the afterbay dam.

Hits Another
Money Snag
The Bret Harte Inn, which has
been opening and closing with
distressing regularity in recent
months, has hit another financial
snag.
A bankruptcy hearing on the affairs of former hotel owners Manuel and Marie Hull was held Tues-~day in the bankruptcy court, but
creditors were unable to reach an
agreement and another meeting
hasbeen set for3 p.m. August 11
in the Referee's Court Room in the
U.S. Court House, Sacramento.
Receiver Raymond S. Torkelson has asked for authority to sell
the inn for $160,000 subject to
court approval and conveyance of
free title. To do this approval
must be obtained from the unsecured creditors, Agreement of
the creditors was not reached at
the session.
The inn was reopened recently
and is being operated by Jack
Cowan of Carmel who is a pros~
pective buyer for the property.

The Chicago Park flume crossings are complete, 900 feet of
flume invert has been placed,
excavation continues on the canal
and forebay and the first penstock
section isin place. Concrete is
being placed at the powerhouse
site.
At Rollins Dam the embank-~ment has been placed to an elevation of 1965 feet.
The project to raise the height
of Scotts Flat Dam is complete
except for concreting and painting of the bridge deck.
The scheduled completion date
for the entire projecy is December
31, 1965

Nevada County Council for Retarded Children will conduct its
annual rummage sale July 30
through August 2 at 217 West
Main Street, Grass Valley.
This isthe main event at which
funds are raised to conduct the
operations of the loca] unit for the
year, Mrs. Tilly Hoag land is

Degrees At Chico
Three Grass Valley residents
will receive degrees from Chico
State College at summer com~
mencement exercises scheduled
for tomorrow afternoon in the
college auditorium.

Wash. aboard the attack aircraft
carrier USS Coral Sea.
Hobbyists throughout the Golden State now have a chance to
exhibit their work in the "Showcase of the West" --the California
State Fair. Officials announced
this week that the first annual
Hobby Show will be a part of this
year's State Fair which runs Sept.
2-13.
The Hobby Show itself has been
set to open on the fifth day of the
Fairto run through the final day.

‘Pozzi On Kearsarge
Louis A. Pozzi, chief aviation
machinist's mate, USN, son of
Mr. and Mrs, Bert Fioletti of Star
Route 1, Grass Valley, is serving
aboard the Navy anti-submarine
aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge
operating out of Long Beach.
Kearsarge, currently deployed
in the Western Pacific as a unit
ofthe U.S. Seventh Fleet, is the
hub of an anti-submarine w arfare unit, composed of surface
and sub-surface vessels which are
equipped to locate and destroy
enemy submarines.
