News of the assassination brought anabrupt end to the celebration of war's end,
For three days business was virtually at
a standstill as all business houses and
saloons closed.
Concurrent with the funeral in Llinois,
Nevada City, Grass Valley and Red Dog
conducted memorial services for Lincoln
on Wednesday.
The Transcript called the assassination
the result of dementia, declaring no sane
friend of the south would have done the
deed.
All loyal men of Nevada City received
the announcement with deepest sorrow
and bitter denunciation of the villains.
‘One man, a known sympathizer with the
south, remarked he was "glad that Lincoln
was dead."' A crowd of excited persons
soon collected around him and there was
indication of violence to be done until
cooler heads prevailed, The district attorney and assessor of ''Colusi" county
were arrested for publiciy expressing gratification of the death of Lincoln;
All public buildings, business houses
and residences were in mourning the day
of the funeral procession and cannons
were fired every half hour.
Judge T. B. McFarland was named
chief marshall for the procession and
Major N. W. Knowlton and C.K, Farquhar
were his aides.
The procession formed at Pine and
Broad, and moved down Broad up Main
and Commerical to Pine, to Broad and to
the theatre.
The official mourning badge was of
white and black ribbons, each one inch
wide and 10 inches long, tied into buttonhole of right lapel.
Thousands of citizens marched in the
procession to the funeral dirge ofCarter's
band,
The marshal and his aides led the procession, followed by the Bridgeport Union
Guard of 40 men, commanded by Captain
Coffey; Nevada Light Guard of 67 men,Capt, J. A. Lancaster commanding; the
hearse drawn. by four white horses;

A, W. Potter, T. P, Hawley, W. H. Sears,
Charles Kent and J, Worrell, pallbearers;
Masons, marshalled by. J, M. Levey; Odd
Fellows, marshalled by J. Clark; Hebrew
Benevolent Society, marshalled by A, Aaruh;. Fire Department, W.H, Davidson, chief
engineer; Hydraulic Hose Company of San
Juan; Protection Hook and Ladder Company; Pennsylvania Engine Company; Nevada Hose Company; Public Schools directed by F. Power; French Mill Co. under
Mr, Charannot with a fine flag draped in
mourning carried by Mr. Gay, who served
three years in the Army of the Potomac;
citizens of the city led by T. T. Davenport, with the colored people of th city
bringing up the rear.

Here are the income totals
projected for next year to operate Nevada Union High:
Federal--$30,000;. State income--principal apportionment,
$241,199; educationally mentally
retarded--$15,000, (The district
gets $750 for each EMR child
. and expects 24 next year. This
will require a second teacher
and one is being sought now.
EMR classes are limited to 15
students each); physically handicapped--$1,500; driver training--$20,000; transportation-$35,00, .
Local income--Secured taxes,
$952,223; prior year taxes,
$25,000; interest, $20,000; special purpose (permissive overrides), $109,605; beginning fund
balance on July 1, $120,000.
The expenditure picture has
remained static in most areas,
with the major changes the reserve and capital fund increases
and an $8,000 boost in the cost
of operating the plant because
of: higher costs for utilities.
Here are the expenditure projections:
Administration--$51,430; instruction--$1,045,556 (includes .
$807,872 in teachers' salaries);
health services --$10,461;
transportation--$80,000; operation. of: plant--$78,730; maintenance of plant--$67,081; fixed
charges--$96,605; food services--$3,500; community services--$30,000; capital outlay-$25,000.

scholarships
Cathie E. Fusek and Kurt E.
Petersen, both of Grass Valley, are among the 1,000 undergraduates at the University of
California to win a scholarship
for the 1969-70 academic year.

. again fell far short of the number requested. Some 3,600 requests for scholarships, and the’ financial aid that generally goes
