: Mix lime, red clay — get hard pan
A PRACTICAL USE has been discorvered for Nevada county's colorful red clay in preparing
base for pavements, U. S, Forest Service officials, with Lloyd White spearheading the project,
mix the clay with white lime, some of which can be seen next to the fence in this photo, After
the mixture is compacted and watered sufficiently, it hardens to an almost concrete-like
consistency, providing a stabilizing base on* which asphalt can be placed, Lime-red clay mix
is being made at the air attack base now in the area where heavy equipment is stored, The
mixture first was tried. on an access road last year and it did not break up, the first base
that has not disintigrated rather rapidly in that location.

Hospital
seeks
members
The foundation formed to seek
long-term financial development
of Sierra Nevada Memorial and
Miners hospitals will begin
seeking additional members
during the fall.
Contacts will be made from
September through November to
attract people who are interested
in the future of the community
facilities,
This was learned Wednesday
by the board of trustees, who
at present are the only members of the fledgling foundation
which was organized earlier this
year,
A general membership meeting will be held on the second
Wednesday of August followed
by the drive for new recruits.«
At the end of that drive, a general orientation meeting will
be held to get the new people
involved in working toward the
foundation's goals.
The trustee meeting was unofficial Wednesday because not
enough members attended to
provide a quorum. About 20
showed up, but 23--half plus one
of the trustees--had to be there
to transact business.
President William Cassettari
deplored the low turnout and it
was decided to write letters to
trustees who have failed to attend the first two quagterly
meetings and see if they want
to remain on the board or resign.
Proposed by-laws changes
were discussed, including one to
gradually reduce the number of
trustees from 45 to 24. Cassettari said it is hoped this move
will "make the group more viable and active."
Al Casey, administrator of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital,
announced that $222,000 has been
donated or pledged in the expansicn fund drive held during
the spring.
