Most historians agree that it was Lola Montez, a noted, erratic adventuress also known as “Countess of Landsberg” /who christened this sparkling gem of the High Sierra upon a visit there ,on July 4, 1853. . ‘She was living in Nevada county’s Grass Valley at that time, ‘says the report, and visited the lake in the company of Delano Block (iden‘tified in other chronicles as Alonzo, Block). Their purpose was to see the launching of a vessel which had been built by Augustus More (sic) of Massachusetts, according to Ben C. Truman’s Tourists’ Illustrated Guide of 1883. However, according fo his own manuscript in the Bancroft Library, Augustus Moore (he spelled it with two o’s) claims to have named the lake on July 4, 1862. . According to George and Bliss Hinkle in their SierraNevada Lakes (Indianapolis, Bobbs-Merrill, 1949), ‘‘Independence was the lake which by some mysterious chemistry of hearsay came to be forever associated with the departed Lola Montez...The Montez, of course, was busy on tour in 1853 (on July 4 she was in Sacramento, according to the San Francisco Herald), and did not then know Old Block, and there were no boats on the lake until © the ‘sixties; nevertheless, the old fiction emerges iodically, with appropriate i gs, and nothing will the Aegend become that the nafme of the exuberant countess became attached to the mountain, and Moore’s Peak became Mount Lola.’’ Add to the contradictions: According to the Grass Valley Telegraph of July 13, 1854, Lola Montez did, make a trip (Continued on page 8) Paine named to council For the second time in 10years, noted county historian Bob Paine has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Nevada City Council. During Monday’s meeting the council voted unanimously to appoint the Nevada City man to fill the vacancy caused by the recent resignation of Peter Ray. The term will expire in March 1976. In 1965, Paine replaced Dan
O’Neill who left the area after a short period on the council. He served seven years during a period of progressive chance concentrating ‘on _ historic ation of the community’s gold rush landmarks. Other civic activities for Paine have included seven years on the governing board of the . Nevada Union Joint High School District during the construction of a new school and three years as a commissioner of the NevadaCounty Airpark during pioneering development, BOB PAINE Paine is currently working for the Lola Montez home restoration and the full development ad the Empire Mine as a historic state park for major Bicentennial projects in Nevada county. ~ NESTLED AMID lofty pines at the northeast end of Independence Lake, a pedestrian village of lodgings, restaurants and shops would be the focal point of a year-around destination resort. Independence Lake plans ) TRUCKEE If the magic of Walt Disney receives the go ahead Thanksgiving of 1978 will be the target date of the Independence Lake — Mt. Lola area transforming into one of the elite vacation spots in the world. Corporate officials were on hand here Thursday to address a joint session of the Nevada and Sierra counties supervisors and an overflow crowd interested in the plans of the famous corporation. Walt Disney Productions outlined a proposal for a vast year-around resort and left little doubt they are ready to proceed with plans for starting construction next year. Independence Lake is located in a quiet, secluded area 13 miles north of Truckee. -The lake and Mount Lola border in both counties and will require the approval from each county. Disney has been studying the area for the past year and their reports gave the site an excellent rating for yeararound family recreation. The magic of the transformation would include 10 ski. lifts, an electrically powered train, a pedestrianoriented village development, condominiums, camp sites and a mountain-top restaurant. Vehicles would be parked underground and the concept of _the facility will include the latest environmental science techniques which include non-polluting transportation, energy conservations, space-age waste collection and disposal, wind and solar generated power. Walt Disney President E. Cardon Walker and project manager Robert Hicks outlined the proposal and assured the audience that every consideration for the environment was They were firm in stating that the project is not a “Disneyland-in-themountains.’’ The project is being planned as a year round destination resort with a strong family emphasis.
