Raymond Hall, 77, died July 12 in Sierra Nevada Memorial
Hospital. He was a member of a pioneer Grass Valley family and a
life-long resident of the area. Funeral services were held from St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church and burial was in St. Patrick’s
Cemetery. :
Kirk Dulaney, 79, died in Miners Hospital July 12. He was a.
veteran of World War I; and had lived in Bellflower where he was a
real estate agent prior to coming to Grass Valley. Funeral services
were held from Bergemann and Son Chapel. The family suggests
that donations in his name be made to the Cancer Aid Society and
the Masonic Lodge.
Hazel E. Fawcett, 59, of Grass Valley, died July 14 in Golden
Empire Convalescent Hospital. She was a native of Virginia and
had.lived here for three years, coming from the Bay Area where
she had lived many years. Private services were held from Hooper
Weaver Chapel followed by cremation in Marysville. Friends
ishing to do so may make donations to the Multiple Sclerosis
Associations with funds earmarked for research.Lois L. Varnell, 51, a 12-year resident of Nevada City, died July 13
in Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Missouri.
The funeral services were held from the Bergemann and Son
Chapel followed by burial in Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The
family requests that any donations be made to the Cancer Aid
Arthur Huebsch, 63, a resident of the North San Juan area for one
year, died at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital July 12. He was a
native of Pomona. Memorial services were held from the First
Congregational Church in Redwood City.
Norman F. Orford, 69, died July 14 in Sierra Nevada Memorial
Hospital. He was a native of South Africa and had lived and worked
in the Bay Area for 40 years before coming here four years ago.
Services were held from Quinn’s Sierra Chapel in Colfax with
cremation at East Lawn in Sacramento. Friends may contribute to
the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Sacramento, Emigrant
Trails, 917 Seventh St., Sacramento.
Genevieve E. Frazier, 54, died July 15 in Mercy San Juan Hospital
at Carmichael. She was a native of Washington state and had lived
in Grass Valley for the past 12 years and for eight of those years:
had been a nurses’ aide at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held from the Hooper-Weaver Chapel
followed by burial in Elm Ridge Cemetery, Grass Valley.

superintendent of schools, according to expenses filed with
‘the county clerk.
Del Pharis spent. $2,325.19 to
be aced out of superintendency
competition by George Bryant,
who reported spending $674.33,
but receiving $926.65 toward his
campaign. Pharis listed no
contributions.
Marcella Carson, treasurertax collector spent $1,312.53 to
walk away with victory in June.
She reported contributions . of
$1,786.41 Sherman Toller and
Vitta Coates challenged Mrs.
Carson. Toller reported personal campaign expenses of
$518.78. Mrs. Coates.said she
spent $1,614, and received $818 in
contributions.
John Laird, unsuccessful
candidate for the third district
was high spender in bids for
super'visorial seats covering two
districts. Laird reported personal expenditures of $991.33.
Fred Conway, incumbent spent
$668.53. of his own money to
retain his seat; while Mike.
McKee, who earned the right to
challenge Conway in the
November election, reported
‘less than $500 in campaign
expenditures. Charlotte
Halstead, another unsuccessful
candidate for the seat claimed
less than $500 in campaign
expenses.
In the fourth district Larry
Filer, incumbent, spent under
$500. Eric Rood, who will be

OPHIR HILL FIRE
An incendiary grass fire at 8
p.m. Thursday was
by 12 men and three units from
the Ophir Hill Volunteer Fire
Department and California
Division of Forestry. The small
fire was located on East Bennett
Street, across from the school
bus barns, and investigation is
continuing. Jerry Dayton,
assistant fire chief of Ophir Hill,
announced they have an opening
for six junior firemen, ages from
16 to 18 years, in their department. Any young men interested

HONOR LIST
James S. Moore of Chicago
Park was named on_ the
President’s Honors List for
California Polytechnic State
University at San Luis Obispo.
Moore is a senior and is
majoring in electrical
engineering. He was honored for
having ‘been named to the
