HERE AND THERE.
There is talk of establishing a wood
pulp factory at Truckee.
The officers of Milo Lodge, No. 48,
K. of P., will be installed this evening.
O. Maltman and family have moved
into their elegant new house on Main
street.
The Grass Valley Trustees propose
to adopt an ordinance prohibiting the
sale of cigarettes, cigars and tobacco’
to-boys-under-16-years of-age.—
‘Fhe 24th instant-has been fixed as
the time for hearing the petition for an
order confirming the sale of real and
personal property belonging to the
estate of George Carroll, deceased.
The Transcript is sending out this
week to its patrons a large number of
bills for subscribtion, ~advertising,
printing, etc. It hopes for and expects a prompt and satisfactory response in every case.
J. Anthony, who has been serving
120 days in the county jail for burning
Newtown, was released yesterday, his
term having expired. While he’ has
been locked up some one has burned
his cabin and killed ‘his dog. He
claims to be anobject of persecution

F. W. Willett, the candy maker,
yesterday swore out a warrant in Justice Sowden’s court. charging _ five
young boys with disturbing the peace‘

his cusiomers and the detriment of
his business. When remonstrated

The Republican says: “Last evening Rey. Mr. Spangler in his sermon
pronounced that he had found Truckee
to be'as good a town as the average
towns in California. That there were
Aots of good, cultured and refined people and that it was a slander to call
Truckee immoral and wicked. It is
by .no means past redemption.” It is
truly gratifying to learn that there is
yet some hope of Truckee’s salvation.
If Parson Spangler can bring that
hitherto unregenerate community
into the fold he will not havédived in
vain. :
Quartz Claims Bought.
M. W. Connelly, of Santa Rosa, has
purchased at Administrator’s sale for
$450.the Mt. Hope and Golden Gate
quartz claims ona tributary of the
south fork of Poorman’s creek, Eureka
township, which belouged to the es-.
: tate of Patrick Mulligan, deceased, It
was in a quarrel over a water right in
the same neighborhood that Mulligan
was killed last-summer.— Mr. Connelly proposes to develop the ledges. . He
used to beengaged.in mining there a}
good many years ago.
+ Death of “Charley” Howard.
The death of H. C. Howard recently occurred at San Francisco» He was
formerly engaged in business at Grass
Valley, and is well known to most_old
settlers of this county. He ‘went from
here to the Comstock, and was amember of the Stock and Exchange Board
of Virginia City until/1870. He was a
partner of George Roberts in the Devil’s Gate (Nevada) toll-road from 1865
IMPROVEMENTS. LAND
What is Being Dore on bine of the
Neighboring Ranches.
P. Edmunds, who recently purchased the Wettereau Ranch in Pleasant
Valley, and christened it Apple Tree
Ranch, has made very extensive improvements there and still has a large
force of men at. work. The dwelling
house has been rebuilt in a substantial
manner, and all conveniences necessity to make it comfortable have been
added regardless.of expense until now
he hasone: of the cosiest homes in
Nevada county challenging the admiration of all who pass that way. Mr. Edmunds is making new fences and arranging to plant out a large number of
fruit trees including an orchard of the
best variety of oranges. The ranch
now hds a large orchard of bearing
trees and Mr. Edmunds indicates his
confidence in fruit growing by.the extensive outlay he will make in plantfig another-orchard.
The Schardin Ranch, purchased by
Dr. Jones from the Nevada County
Land Association, is being transfornied by its owner by extensive as well
as expensive improvements. A—wire
fence is being built circling the entire
'. property, and a large force of men are
engaged in plowing and preparing the
land for the large orchard and vineyard the Doctor will have planted dur. . ing the winter. Valuable improvements are to be made to the already
fine living house on the ranch. All
this shows commendable ; enterprise
and confidence in the‘ horticultural
capabilities of Nevada county.
Joseph Thomas, superintendent of
the Providence mine, now has the 640
‘acre ranch on Gold Flat which -he
lately bought from the railroad enclosed with a substantial fence. He
has ordered 5,000 assorted fruit trees
and engaged an experienced nurseryman to superintend the~ planting of
them. Mr. Thomas has devoted
about all of his years so far to the gold
mining industry, and is one ofthe
foremost mine managers of the State.
At the same time he hasthe breadth
of mind and business foresight to discern that the future of this county in
horticulture is very ae eceeaing.
AN OLD SIERRAN.

Death of a Former Well known Surveyor
of this Part of the State.
—
Isaac Jones, civiland mining engineer, died at Los Angeles last week.
He arrived in Sierra countyin 4851,
and was twice elécted to the office of
County Surveyor. He surveyed the
lines and superintended the constructions of the most important ditches in
that cotinty for conveying water for hydraulic mining during his residence
there.
In 1861, in company with W. Thomas, he footed it to Virginia City, packing his blankets while Thomas carried
struments. He was appointed Chief
Civil Engineer of the V. and T. railroad and surveyed the route and superIn 1872 he was appointed Chief Civil
Engineer of the mines under the control of Mackay, Flood and Fair, and
later of those under. the control of the
late Wm. Sharon. During his incumbency of that position he personally
superintended the underground surveying of the princial mines on the
Comstock lode.
Subsequently he was appointed Superintendent of the Sierra Nevada and
still later of the Yellow Jacket mine.
After the discovery of the mines in
Tombstone, Arizona,he was appointed
to the superintendency of the Contention and Tranquility mines at that
place, which latter position he held
until a few years ago, when he removed to’Los Angeles, where he ended his
busy life.
His knowledge of underground mining engineering was unsurpassed, and
he was held in the highest esteem.
He leaves. two brothers and three
children, the latter having all attained
their majority.

we reduce the price of hats and feathThe political demagogues, legal shysters and soft-pated:cranks of the valleys continue to bang away with.as
much vigor at tle sleeping industry of
hydraulic mining as they did when it
wasin the full glory of its. productiveness. The demagogues seek glory, the
shysters want to squeeze a few dollars
more out the too trusting ranchers, and
the cranks aim to relieve themselves
of some of their surplus bile. The following from. Wednesday’s RecordUnion déscribes their most recent demonstrations: ‘‘A meeting of the landowners on the Cosumnes river was
held atthe Slough House yesterday,
to discuss the question of an Anti-Debris Association, The meeting was
organized by electing Wm. Sheldon
Chairman, and G. W. Hancock Secretary. A goodly number of the landowners were present, as well as the
full Board of Supervisors of the county. There was a unanimous feeling in
favor.of taking measures to stop the
dumping of hydraulic mining debris
into the river and its tributaries, and
tothat end a committee was appointed
to draft articles of association and _reheld January 14th. The Supervisors
favored the organization of an association, as that-course would sustain their
past record on the subject, and give
encouragement to future agressive .action. There was a strong and determined feeling at the meeting that hydraulic mining on the Cosumnes ‘must
go,’ and that soon.”

grapes this vineyard in three
or four years should yield an annual
income of $300,000, but if it be only
halfthis amount it will give a large

property has been turned over to the
trustees. Under the conditions of the
gift-deed the vineyard cannot be sold

though it may be leased and thé rental
