BLM placing
emphasis on
South Yuba
The Bureau of Land Management is placing increasing-emphasis on protecting the scenic
values of its lands along the
South Yuba River in Nevada
county, a spokesman said,
Richard Traylor of theBLM's
Folsom District Office, told
Sierra Club members meeting
in Nevada City that most of the
BLM's 19,500 acres in Nevada
county has "substantial recreation potential.
He noted 6,200 acres have
been officially designated as the
South Yuba Recreation Lands to_
give the public more familiarity with the public domain near
the river.
Recalling the construction in
1968 of the South Yuba Riding
and Hiking Trail by the BLM,
Traylor called it "an instantaneous success," The BLM
plans to extend the trail downriver from Edward's Crossing
to Purdon Crossing if funds
are available during the 197273 fiscal year, he said.
"We're going to manage the
South Yuba as if it were already classified under the Wild
and Scenic Rivers Act," Traylor told a gathering of 30 persons, He said the South Yuba
currently awaits "study river"
classification so it can be given
detailed analysis to determine
whether it meets criteria of the
federal act. The BLM and the
Forest Service earlier recommended the river for the detailed study.

2 and 3 p.m, The nature hike starts from the Alvin Trivelpiece
Memorial Overlook, which is located in the campground area,
