July 29, 1965..Nevada County Nugget.. = °“NUGGET FEATURES @ & DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE @@6088 @@ Oo he Bee oGe0Seus @ ‘The Sandpiper’ L Dear Bob Paine, I want to tell you how much I enjoyed yourcolumn on William Bourn and how his money from the Empire Mine bought the Lakes of Killarney. My neighbors are Irish and when they visit Ireland next spring your column of July 1st: willgowiththem, Onthechance you have never seen the Lakes of Killarney I enclose a beautiful view for you. Ihave 70 glorious 35 MM slides of Nevada City and two close-ups of Billy Bourn's Empire Mine CBbCBne FOOL’S GOLD buy that must be out of print. It is H, P, Davis' "Gold Rush Days In Nevada City” published by Harold Berliner in 1948. Sincerely, Elizabeth Reid Monterey Park, California Hilltop Peace By Mark Bullock There is a beauty in the mountains, There is peace up in the hills, And there's music sweetly soothing, In the laughter of the rills. Corrupt upper middle class around the Big Sur country near Monterey, California, This brings the Episcopal clergyman Burton tocallon Miss Taylor at her artists studio overlooking the Pacific ocean to discuss different philosophies. Burton is urbane, but is no match for the charming Liz. I never know why it is always the Episcopalian ministers who succumb to the ways of the flesh. Don't the Baptists and the Seventh Day Adventists ever have feet of clay? Kael. * * r Lakes of Killarney--Bought with Empire Mine Gold mansion. Other pictures I value are ones of your Christmas Tree Sequoia before it fell to the freeway. Some excellent ones of Malakoff Diggins that is to become a State Park thanks to you wonderful people of Nevada County that want to share your treasures with the rest of the world, When I travel the by-ways around Nevada CityI travel alone to find the beauty and peace that is so abundant in your countryside. I don't mean to bore you, but I just want to tell you how much your town, people and environment mean to just one person. I'm sure it means a lot to others, but to mel liketo think of Nevada City as my future and permanent home. The Mother Lode I've travelled from one end tothe other. Only in Nevada City did I find the most friendly and kindly people. Everywhere isa smile and a hello for strangers. Your churches which I attend greet you as one of the congregation tome Nevada City is just heaven on earth, When Mark Bullock wrote Hilltop Peace I am sure that he was writing the poetry that is Nevada City. There is a book I would like to Let me walk the pleasant high roads, Where the wind in voices kind Softly whisper a contentment That brings quietness of mind I know God's in the valley And in the busy street; But He seems a little nearer On a hilltop's still retreat. Here's my longing for communion With my Lord is not denied, And my hungering for His presence Is completely ‘satisfied. I wanderedin to see Liz and Dick inthe Sandpiper. Ever since I became a birdwatcher, even titles of movies intrigue me so I thought the picture was for birdwatchers, After just a few seconds of the wide screen I sensed I was way Off base left my seat and took a second look at the marquee which advertised ‘an adult love story’. Liz Taylor plays a fallen woman who has excessive love for her bastard son from whom she refuses toseverthe umbilical cord. The son continually breaks the law and under court orders is sent to a church school run by Richard Burton, Liz doesn't want her son
brainwashed by the scrubbed and Burton finds Liz repairing the injured wing of a sandpiper, While your eye is on the symbolic injured bird seeking freedom and Liz in her overflowing sweaters Dick is busy turning his collar around, Mr. Burton and Miss Taylor. They were paid $750,000 for this blooper. Dick tells his innocent wife Eva Marie Saint that he is going to San Francisco on a fund raising drive, but instead we find him on the beach with Liz pawing the sand, The camera moves to the rippling waters of the blue Pacific. We now find Dick commutting back to his wife to tell her whats happened, Then back to Liz to tell her that he has told his wife. Well, as many a man has found out, his gabbiness has got him in hot waterwith bothwomen, This gives Liz a chance for her big scene and she fusses and fumes in the grand hurt manner, The photography is superb. Much of to-days beatnik artists life is portrayedin an interesting manner. Big Sur scenery however isno match for the heaving sighs of Lizin four sweater changes. I know little of the species called woman, but the little I do know makes me think that the character portrayed by Miss T aylor is totally phony. She pretendsto hate men but is constantly setting booby traps like the spider with the flies. Like the marque said its an adult love story. Tell meays A $750,000 Rotten Egg Somebody just what is an adult? I'm not sure that I ever metone, Dear Bob Paine, Enjoyed your account of the Galivotti story. Did you know that the driver, Jay Ostrum, was Elaine Mobbey's uncle? Women at the University of Nevada in Reno,. Nevada! Elaine is now Dean of As you know, she was born and raised in Bloomfield, She isa master story teller, One lives thru the whole experience when Elainetells "UncleJay's” version of the story especially right at the spot where the men were first shot at, Not long ago, I could not find the "Galivotti rock" on that grade. If it has been destroyed, or, if the old name has faded couldn't the Nevada Co. Historical Society remark that spot? Perhaps that hasallbeendone, We drive past those old markers too rapidly these days, One should get a tape recording of Elaine's version of that story, Sincerely, Fidella Legg Churc jo karkhens whine fyroe_ Ns AE. fh dee R_ CAROUSEL July 16 through August 11 ..A two man show of the works of Nevada City artists Loana Beeson and Marge Kopp will open July 16 in The Phoenix gallery in “Auburn, The gallery is open Wednesday and Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. August 1 .»-The annual Barbecue sponsored by St, Patrick's Parish will beheld at the Lion's Lake Picnic grounds off McCourtney Road next to the fairgrounds, In addition to the barbecue there will be a thecal hae lik no uti Y ® variety of booths and an opportunity to win a trip for two to Hawaii or Mexico, A complete movie outfit will be the second prize.
