Town Talk
All’s Well That Ends Well..
Parking..Topless Controversy
When Ruth Paine, Shirley Taylor
and Sharon Fairclough opened the
box office at the Nevada Theater
last Week they sold most of the
seats for the Marian Libbey
Golden Days production within a
few hours. Except, of course,
there were no seats, and nobody
was quite sure where seats would
be obtained. Not only were
people flocking to buy seats when
there were no seats, but they were
buying seats for a show that had
not yet been written,
Nevada City's faith in happy
endings reached its high point
when customers for tickets began
asking the box office ladies
whether they could go into the
theater to look for their “seats, "
Of course, said the ladies. So
the customers would goin, survey
what to ordinary mortals appeared
to be an empty auditorium, and
emerge all smiles. “Those are
wonderful seats you have given
us,” they would say,
Now the seat problem has been
solved, They will be obtained
from Nevada Union High School
and from the veterans hall in
Nevada City. And Monday
morning, Al Trivelpiece's script
was completed. All it took was
faith--and a bit of hard work.

Somebody up at the courthouse
seems to be taking a pretty broad
view of what the county controller
is supposed to control, You will
remember that sometime back
the supervisors turned the clerkauditor into the auditorcontroller,
and the recorder into the clerkrecorder. The position of auditor
controller was to be strictly a
fiscal one, involving budgets and
expenditures.
But the controller was recently
assigned the sensitive job of
receiving and presenting to the
supervisors their correspondence,
He also runs tha courthouse switchboard and collects all mail from
the county departments for
mailing. And the controller's
office runs the letter copying
machine for the various departments,
When the controller's office
moved out of the clerk's office,
the county clerk's set of law books
went along too. Perhaps the next
step is for the controller officially
to assume the job of county
counsel,

While Nevada City talks about
parking and downtown beautification, Grass Valley is moving
ahead on both fronts. Downtown
merchants expect the new 66 car
parking lot at the site,;of the old
NID building to be completed this
fall, There will be an entrance
to the lot from the south side of
Bank ‘St,, where three buildings
have been bought by the city for
the purpose, The city may or
may not go ahead thereafter to
turn the NID building into a new
city hall, Present plans call for
free parking in the new city lot.
Leading downtown merchants
are also cooperating on a program which may result in a city
study of the possibility of turning
Mill St. into a shopping mall,
‘complete with landscaping and
general beautification, The
historic arcade on the west side
of the street would be retained.
What's the secret of Grass
Valley's progress? "All you need ~
is a spirit of cooperation among
the businessmen and between the
businessmen and the city council," says Fred Conway. Any
other questions?
sees:
It was good enough for Grandpa--but is it good enough for us?
That is the burning controversy
before the Nevada City liberal
arts com mission this week as it
prepares for the weekend Golden
Days. The item in dispute is
Connie Rector's half nude picture,
which has been proposed as a prop
for a barroom scene, Right now
it looks as if this Nevada City
topless controversy will be
decided by the requirements of
historical authenticity.

WILDFLOWER OF THE WEEK
»
Oxeye Daisy, Chrysanthemum leucanthemum, Composite family.
Much resembling some of our garden daisies, this large glistening
white daisy with its center of yellow disk-flowers is a bright addition
to our fields and waysides, As are so many of our wild flowers,
this isa native of Eurasia and has been introduced into this pe sea
An herbaceous plant one to 3 feet high, the branches are stiff and
erect, sometimes forming a thick, rounded bush, They are found
in fields and waysides in Northern California as far south as San
Mateo County. Watch for them locally between Grass Valley and
Auburn and in the fields along Marysville Highway below Bitney's
Corners, Late bloomers, they appear in late July through September.
Chrysanthemum means golden flower in Greek and refers to the
bright yellow disk flowers rather than the white rays,

Ghost Towns Are
Turning Into Dumps
Not so long ago it waspossible
to drive through the mining
country and in the numerous ghost
towns visualize life there before
the turn of the century, Many
beautifully weathered old buildings stood almost as they were
when their owners moved away,
Today vandals have almost completely destroyed these interesting
relics and what one usually finds,
where a town once stood, is a
scene resembling the county
dump.
Among the worst culprits are
. the bottle hunters. Of course this
is not to say that all bottle collectors are vandals, As originally
conceived and still practiced by
many decent and conscientious
people, collecting and displaying
beautiful or interesting old
bottles, some of them tinted
violet bythe desert sun, isa
genteel hobby similar to collecting stamps or antique spoons,
Howeverthe monetary value of
antique bottles has now reached
the point where hunting them has
become a serious business, somewhat akin to the original mining
for minerals, with much the same
ruthlessness and disregard for
aesthetic values, This kind of
collecting is strenuous work. Most
of the valuable bottles that were
just lying around have long since
been picked up and now it is
necessary to dig for them, pry up
floors, tear down walls,
As an example of the lengths to
which these hinters will go, take
Rawhide, Nevada, some 60 miles
east of Fallon via U.S, 50. A
few years ago one of the best
preserved and largest of Nevada's
ghost towns, it was a mecca for
photographers, history buffs and
plain sightseers. Today, thanks
to the bottle hunters, you will not
find a Single building intact, with
the exception of one or two houses
that have been taken over and
somewhat renovated by squatters.
Cans, old bedsprings and all the
usual detritus left by the great
American litterbug are scattered
everywhere, Abandoned mine
shafts which had been used as tin
can dumpshave been dug out and
their contents strewn in all
directions, these old dumps being
rich mines of bottles,
What has happened to Rawhide
is happening to many California
ghost towns as well--Forest in
Sierra County, Copperopolis and
Jennie Lind in Amador County,
for instance.
Weare pleased that at least-one
of Nevada County's old mining
towns, North Bloomfield, is to be
protected as a part of the Malakoff
State Park anda ranger will be on
duty to guard it from unscrupulous
diggers for treasure of all kinds,
