I had a pleasant chat with Jim Dunbar, radio KGO of San Francisco last Thursday. Jim wondered if we were related but more specifically he wanted to find out about our Rough and Ready Secession Days Celebration. Mrs.~Martina Paull sent him a handbill.-Wasn't it nice it was a live broadcast. Maybe some San Franciscans will wend their way over to see us all on the 4th of July. *#** The Arnold Turners are expecting Mr. Turner's brother Ottis Turner,. and his family from southern age ae for a visit over the 4th of July holiday. Pre ** Mr, and Mrs, George Staidl have guests from Wabeno, Wisconsin. Mrs. Staidl's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Hasenohrl _ and her younger sister and brother are here for a short visit. They all spent the weekend in Sacramento with Mrs. Staidl's sister. “Uy : cay atdi 2 £9¥ etal i miisé tye Governor Reagan extended his best wishes to Rough and Ready for a successful 4th of July. But he won't be with us for the celebration, due ‘to. a: previous appointment. ek Our dance last Saturday night was a lot of fun, The pair of chickens, donated by Mr. Bryan Christensen, were won by Mrs, Dr. Gore. Mrs. Betty West won two cakes, Bruce Davison also won one, He got caught dancing with the broom. The taped music done by David Doolan and the live music by Clarence Treadway and Elgin West had plenty of we *** The Rough and Ready Squirrel Cage opened last Saturday under severe handicaps, Ice Cream and some steaks and sandwich meat failed to arrive as ordered, but there was still plenty of delicious food. It's fun eating hamburgers from a gold pan. Rough and Ready Live Entertuinment, Food Concessions, Games for Everyone. All Day JULY 4th Plan to attend, bring the family. +*% The Rough and R dy Grang OOF Hall to public for-resting open and refreshing during the Seces«sioh Days Celebration on has made its restrooms avail. bie and the main driveway will be used for various booths, The grocery and the cafe will close and space on their porches will be put to good use: The Fire Department Auxiliary will establish the National House Dining Room on the property next to the grocery. The Lucky Strike Saloon will be located next to the Blacksmith's. The 4-H fireworks stand will be on the other _Side-of the shop. Games and contests will fill every available nopk -and cranny of the town. Fun will begin at 10 a.m. and last until dark. A concert by the 56lst Air Force Band is scheduled at the Band Stand at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. ' The Independence Day celebration at Columbia was a traditional event in the Gold Rush days when the community was booming. Sprow, Director of Har~ bors and Watercraft, announced toaday with great concern that 42 persons had died while boating in California during the first five months of 1968, a sharp _ fise over the 30 fatalities reported for the sanie peiod last ow's figures also oved that the State's boatéts had reported 68 injuries and $405,000 in property damagefrom 190 accidents B62 vessels, -Thirty-six of the deaths rerted were by drowning, 7 from alling overboard, and 29 due to vessel capsizing or sinking. Two deaths resulted from injuries received in high speed racing, 2 from suffocation from fumes inside.a cabin, and 2 from being struck by a boat while in the water. involving ~ Fatalities were reportedfrom all parts of the state and involved all types of water. Fifteen occurred in offshore ocean waters, 4 in bays, 15 in rivers, and 10 in lakes and reservoirs, The size of craft involved varied from 12 feet to 32 feet, mostly in the 14 to 17-foot range. All but 6 of the boat operators were over 80 years of age.
