all was joy and laughter when
Fanny Brice walked on--but in
her personal life.

Food stamp
program to
start soon
The United States Department
of Agriculture, the Nevada County Department of Public Social
Services and the Placer County
Welfare Department are moving
toward scheduled August 1 openings of county food stamp programs.
USDA is now authorizing grocers -who will accept food
coupons as they do cash, And
-the welfare departments are
certifying participants -who
will purchase food stamps with
money normally spent for food
and receive a "bonus" of free
coupons,
Lewis K, Theusen, supervisor of USDA's’ Consumer and
Marketing Service field office in
Sacramento, said he has invited
all known Nevada and Placer
County grocers to participate in
the programs.
Eugene Newman, director of
the Department of Public Social
Services in Nevada County, estimated that 600 households will
be certified for participation in
the program by opening day. .
The same number of households
has been estimated by David C.
Echols, director of welfare in
Placer County.
About 2100 persons in each
county will be eligible to participate. Most of these are
households or individuals receiving public assistance, but
Newman and Echols pointed out
that the program is also available to other low income households not on welfare, depending
on income and resources,
All low income people who
think they may qualify for food
stamps are urged to call or

~ Mrs. Lawrence
‘chairman of tax
appeals board
‘Supervisor Dean Lawrence
was selected Tuesday to serve
as chairman of Nevada county's
tax appeals board in what could
be a lengthy round of protests
this year. ae
In the past, the chairman of
supervisors normally has handled the appeal or equalization
hearings as well, but Chairman
Lou Hartman felt it would be
better if he runs the morning
county business sessions and
lets Mrs, Lawrence conduct the —
afternoon equalization hearings
because of the likelihood that
lots of protests will be filed.
Hartman madé the motionthat
Mrs, Lawrence, the board's vice
chairman, be chairman of the
appeals board. The motion was
adopted 4-0 with Mrs, Lawrence
abstaining. Hartman was named
vice. chairman of equalization.
The first tax appeals hearing
will be held on Sept. 10 at 1:30
p.m. People who have a protest —
can file it between now and Aug,
26 at the clerk's office.
The reason a large number of
assessment appeals are expected is the big jump in assessments, particularly in the eastern end of the county. The secured property roll is up 29
per cent this year, mainly because the Truckee area has
been reappraised for the first
time ever, Assessor E. A, (Bub)
Tobiassen has said.

along I-80 to
be resurfaced

Co., Inc. of Redding was low
bidder Wednesday on a State
‘Division of Highways' project
to reconstruct the decks of 16
bridges at various locations on
Interstate 80 between Long Ravine Undercrossing, about 1.3
miles east of Colfax, and the
Truckeee River Bridge, about
five miles east of Truckee. The bid was $287,420 and there
were three bidders,
The new work will renovate
bridge decks. which, because of
winter snows and inclement
weather, have become damaged
by tire chains, snowplow blades,
salt used in combating snow and
ice and other adverse factors.
Through traffic should experience little if any delays
‘while the work is progressing.
Plans have been made for routing motorists around the re_ construction areas via ramps
and undercrossing roads,
keeping at lease one lane open
for each direction of travel
during most of the work and
limiting full lane closures to a
maximum of 15 minutes.
