Missouri buncombe artist
bilks miners
in Midvalley Country.
In 1850, Moore's sawmill on the Bear River was one of the
first stops for miners returning from the gold fields. John S.
Moore did more than saw logs. He also operated as a broker,
converting the miners’ heavy wealth into a more convenient
form of paper money: Missouri bank-notes. However, John
S. was an energetic counterfeiter and he was dealing out
spurious Missouri bank-notes.
Duped miners arrived in Missouri on their way home, their
illusions of untold wealth buoyed by Moore’s bogus bills.
And here they made a grim discovery. Except for the adventure and dangers they had experienced, they were as
poor as the day they started.
Nowadays people aren't about to take a chance with their
hard-earned savings and chalk it up to experience. They
take a show me” attitude. That's as it should be. And at

record in forty years of service, for instance. We've honored
