Prospector’s dream
THE PROSPECTOR'S DREAM is on display at Placer Savings and Loan in
Grass
Valley. This quartz gold specimen weighs 22 pounds and contains an estimated
54 ounces of gold. It is valued at about $20,000. The quartz gold came from one
of the last major hard rock gold mines in operation, the 16-1 near Alleghany in
Sierra county. Placer Savings is putting the gold on display as part of the
decoration for the 4th of July celebration — and today is the first anniversary
of the business in Grass Valley. Manager Chris Schaaf of the local branch
displays the local quartz which will be locked up for safekeeping at night.

Buck Owens is well on his way
to being an American legend —
his rise from a boyhood in a
sharecropper’s family, which
traveled from Texas to Arizona
to California, to a popular
always
spreading the gospel of country
music, has made him a favorite
entertainer with audiences all
over the world for a quarter
. century.
Buck had his own radio show
, when he was only 16, was
married at 17 and a father at 18.
In 1951, at the age of 20, Buck
moved his family to Bakersfield
where he formed a band called
Schoolhouse Playboys. He spent
many days sweating through
California playing guitar with
the band, and sometimes
playing sax and trumpet. By the
time he was 23 he realized he
wanted to make country music
his career and decided the best
way to do it was to become a
song writer as well.
His first hit was Down On The
Corner of Love. Later came his
next hit, Under Your —Spell
Again, and from then on his
string of hit records is un‘matched, all performed with the
same good-natured, sincere,
twangy sensibility that made
Buck such a big star.
Buck’s success is a matter of
hard work and lots of talent.
Even more than that, however,
it’s a matter of staying with the
people, not getting away from
the beat of the land. Buck sings
about loneliness, and you know
he’s felt it.
His favorite hit is Together
Again, because ‘‘most everyone,
at one time or another, can
associate himself with that song.
As Buck sings ,about love and
little things like private heartbreak, joy, and other commonplace events people
everywhere all understand his
song.
Buck is known as country
music’s best friend because he
has helped the careers of many.
artists who have gone on to
become stars — like Merle
Haggard, Freddie Hart, Red
Simpson, and Susan Raye who
will appear in Sacramento at
Music Circus with Buck and the
Buckaroos.
