Here is Truckee in all her former glory on a clear,
blue-skyed Fourth of July. Her Queen-of+the-day attended
by little ladies-in-waiting and all drawn along for all to
see, by four snow white steeds. In the upper left corner
we can see General McGlashan'‘s mansion, and close to
it the Tower built around the famous Rocking Stone of
Indian legend.
The First and Last Chance, the Louis and the Eagle
saloons lie bright under the moon sun, and some of the
boys are crowding the doorways, ready to hoist one soon
as the parade's passed,
The larger photograph shows the Nevada City bank, on
another Fourth, outside Hyman & Company's Wholesale
and Retail Emporium on the corner of Commercial and
Main streets; beyond Hyman’s we can see the Hibernia
Hall and beyond that again, across Coyote street, the
South Yuba Canal Company's building that houses the
Nugget today.
The Glory That Was
GRASS VALLEY---The Grass
Valley Junior Chamber of
Commerce last week suggested a building program at
Loma Rica Airport which
they say will put the airport
on a paying basis.
The recommendations followed a study. by a committie of the junior chamber,
“Currently the county is
losing airport revenue due to
the lack of the facilities recommended," the committee said,
They proposed the completion of the airport gas station which the county is now
building by lease-purchase
agreement with Standard Oil
Company.
In addition they asked:
Trees For Freeways
Planned In California
SACRAMENT O--The inauguration of a new program of
planting and replacement of
trees along existing andnewly constructed freeways was
announced today »by State
Director of Public Works Robert B. Bradford.
The tree planting program,
which will be in addition to
the landscaping and functional planting carried on by the
Division of Highways for
many years, won the prompt
and enthusiastic endorsement of Governor Edmund G.
Brown.
Bradford said that the new
tree planting policy was recommended by State Highway Engineer]. C, Womack
and approved by the California Highway Commission.
The first allocations for tree.
planting projects are expected to appear in the State
Highway Budget for the 196263 fiscal year which the Commission will adopt this fall,
Cost of the tree planting
will vary from $100 to$2, 500
a mile, depending on the
areas involved.
"Thetree planting will be
particularly valuable,” Bradford said, “where a freeway
traverses a rural area in
which many existing trees
have had toberemoved from
the right of way during construction, "
The new program envisions the planting of trees
that will fit into local conditions and will not involve
maintenance beyond watering them for a year or two.
The paving of a roadway
through the administration
area at the airport. County
road funds would be used for
this,
Surfacing of portions of the
administration area, possibly
from $20,000 budgeted for
the airport by cuunty supervisors,
Construction of a combination office building, financed by gas tax rebate. About
$5000 isin the gas tax rebate
fund now.
Construction ofsixTshape hangers at an estimated cost of $18,000. Down
payment of $3600 would be
required, with the balance
to be paid at the rate of $3000
per year, over a five year
period,
The junior chamber estimates that in a ten year period gasoline sales would
bring in $20, 000; gas tax rebates, $15, 000; Hanger rental, $16, 200; Tie-Down fees,
$9,000; and cafe rental,
$2,400.
"Thus it can be readily
seen that aninvestment, this
year, of $20,000, will be
amply repaid over a ten-year
span, " the junior chamber reports claims.
In addition, the report
