The above map shows the proposed location, including two alternates, of a future four-lane freeway on the Auburn-Grass Valley
section of Highway 49,
State highway officials at the Marysville district office have
announced that the project will come under discussion at a public
meeting July 15, at 10 a.m., in the Mt. Vernon Grange Hall on
Bell Road. ‘
The four-mile divided full freeway will start at Rock Creek,
about three miles north of Auburn, and extend northerly to 0. 2-mile
south of the Placer-Nevada county line at the Bear River. Rock
Creek is about one-half mile north of the turn-off to DeWitt State
Hospital on Bell Road. :
Thenew alignment will generally parallel the existing highway,
but ona straighter line. Two alternates, as shown on the map, are
a up for consideration for a one-mile section beginning immediately
i west of Elders Corner at Dry Creek Road. Alternate A would travel

four to five hundred feet to the west of the existing route; Alternate
B would closely follow the present road on an improved alignment.
In either case, all the existing highway between Dry Creek Road
and Mt, Vernon -Edgewood Road will be retained as a frontage road.
Atits south end, the project will connect with the partial freeway
which runs from DeWitt into Auburn, On the north, it will join with
twonew parallel bridges over the Bear River, the first of which will
be under construction soon.
District Engineer Alan S, Hart of Marysville will conduct the
meeting, assisted by staff members who will present the engineering and economic considerations involved in the project,
Hart urged all interested individuals and groups to attend the
meeting and present their views, ask questions, and offer any pertinent information they may possess concerning the proposal,
Statements may be given orally or filed as written documents.
