secession Days
Great Success
By Fay M. Dunbar
The Rough and Ready Secession Days Celebration held Sunday, July 2, was a large
success with a crowd of approximately 1500
attending the festivities. Chairman Bill Thomas
was very pleased with the turn-out.
Program Chairman HelenAvery put on several
different events, among them the secession
play which was given twice during the day.
One of the most hilarious events was the mock
wedding, typical of the year 1850. The unfortunate groom, who just happened to already
have a family, made a hasty retreat when said
family made their appearance on the scene.
There was alsoan old fashioned vigilante-style
hanging of an outlaw, which added color to the
program.
Jon Pharis and Linda Burkhard were crowned
King and Queen of the Twister Contest.
Presentation of awards forthe best and most
authentic costumes went to Mrs. Sue Fay who
was wearing a striped knitted bathing suit of
the 1850's, and to Mr. Peter Rocco for the
man's costume. Dora Grieme, in a dance hall
costume, and Bill Thomas as "Miner Whiskey
Pete" were also most interesting and quite
authentic.
Mr. "Monty" Jones was the organizer of the
highly successful horseshoe pitching contest.
He happens to be a winner of a championship ,
contest recently held in Los Gatos.
Mr.Clarence Treadway organized impromptu
groups of four who changed about and kept
music appropriate for the occasion going all
during the day.
Introduction of the pioneer families still living in the area included Maude Calvert,
Manuel Alameda, Asa Fippin, Sid Fippin,
Manuel Frank, Mrs. Effie Howell and Mrs.
Martina Paull.
The Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary proved
to be a popular stop with all the homemade
goodies for sale. Also the Lucky Strike Saloon
where one could be refreshed with a tall, Cou
drink.
The chairmen of the celebration, as w
the townspeople, are already looking f
to and talking of a bigger:and better c
tion in the future.
