There were people everywhere, Estimates of attendance ran as high as 25,000, The parade itself’ was the center of attraction during the weekend events and people were jammed everywhere along the parade route. Many considered it one of the best parades during the 50-year event, The large crowd was alive with excitement and showed their approval of the parade entries as they passed along the route, Near the head of the parade was the grand* marshal, Frank: Gallino who received a large hand everywhere as citizens greeted the popular. Businesses up and downGrass Valley reported a booming business, After the parade people flocked to Memorial Park for the activities which were all termed a success, The Elks' barbecue was reported a sellout and the water fights and hose cart races drew their usual crowd, Many watched the whiskerino contest; kiddies’ events were held and the Smarteens auctioned off many pies, The fireworks show at Hennessy Field closed the events, Hundreds gathered to watch the display put on by the City of Grass Valley and theGrass Val_Jey Jaycees, The weekend events started Friday with the crowning of the 4th of July queen, Janet Yun, The popular Grass Valley girl, who is attending Sacramento — State College this fall, reigned over the remaining weekend events, Taking second place in the queen contest was Dorinda Noble, Rorie Gallegos was second runnerup, Miss Y un was also honored by the girls, winning the Miss Congenalty award, Chairman of this year's parade was Robert Harrison, president of the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce, Harrison presented some social awards at the Friday night activities, Receiving awards for participation in the 4th activities were Wally Krill, Ray Westbrook, Gary Taylor, Richard. Sterns, Midge Skeahan and the Cousin Jack Lions Club, Glen Lockhart was themaster of ceremonies, The Nevada City Fire Department grabbed first. prize in the floats division of the parade, The Pearl Glass float won second place honors. Other winners were: Antique autos — Capital A's, Sacramento and the Grass Valley Fire Department, .
