Fourth of July celebration highly successful
From . the fireworks to the
whiskerino contest the 4th of
July celebration in Grass Valley added up to the largest
turnouts in western Nevada
County.
There were people everywhere, Estimates of attendance
ran as high as 25,000,
The parade itself’ was the
center of attraction during the
weekend events and people were
jammed everywhere along
the parade route. Many considered it one of the best parades
during the 50-year event,
The large crowd was alive
with excitement and showed their
approval of the parade entries
as they passed along the route,
Near the head of the parade
was the grand* marshal, Frank:
Gallino who received a large
hand everywhere as citizens
greeted the popular. Nevada
County undersheriff.
Businesses up and downGrass
Valley reported a booming business, After the parade people
flocked to Memorial Park for the
activities which were all termed
a success,
The Elks' barbecue was reported a sellout and the water
fights and hose cart races drew
their usual crowd, Many watched
the whiskerino contest; kiddies’
events were held and the Smarteens auctioned off many pies,
The fireworks show at Hennessy Field closed the events,
Hundreds gathered to watch the
display put on by the City of
Grass Valley and theGrass Val_Jey Jaycees,
The weekend events started
Friday with the crowning of the
4th of July queen, Janet Yun,
The popular Grass Valley girl,
who is attending Sacramento —
State College this fall, reigned
over the remaining weekend
events, Taking second place in
the queen contest was Dorinda
Noble, Rorie Gallegos was second runnerup, Miss Y un was also
honored by the girls, winning the
Miss Congenalty award,
Chairman of this year's parade was Robert Harrison, president of the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce,
Harrison presented some social awards at the Friday night
activities, Receiving awards for
participation in the 4th activities
were Wally Krill, Ray Westbrook, Gary Taylor, Richard.
Sterns, Midge Skeahan and the
Cousin Jack Lions Club,
Glen Lockhart was themaster
of ceremonies,
The Nevada City Fire Department grabbed first. prize in the
floats division of the parade,
The Pearl Glass float won second place honors.

The MC during the parade
was Dave Darrin, Honored guest
at the parade was James Woodworth, press secretary to Lt.
‘Governor Ed Reinecke, Woodworth took the place of Jean Pet“erson who became ill Saturday.
Parade judges were Mike Pulsipher and Dunbar Yakayama of
Sacramento; Sally Cooper, Pete
Brennan and Mike Krill. ,
At the park Sunday the annual
water fight between the city fire
departments was called-a draw,
The California Division of Forestry won the hose cart race,
recording a narrow victory over
a new group, the Cousin Jack

in Sunday's huge Fourth of July Parade, The parade was the
largest in the history of Grass Valley's semi-annual celebration of the Fourth,
Paris Flea Market
scheduled July 18
Grass Valley will be buzzing
with activity on July 18 when
the second annual Paris Flea
Market will be held,
‘Dealers and exhibitors from
all over California and other
states will be displaying and
selling a huge variety of goods,
The admission-free event will
be held at Mt, St, Mary's Convent, Church and Chapel Streets
from 8 a.m, til 6,
Ninteenth century porches
and parlors of the convent will
provide the background for a
treasury of antiques, Items for
sale will include cut glass, jewelry, musical Americana, furni‘ture, bottles, coins, and dolls,
Artists and craftsmen will add
flavor by bringing talents along,
In addition to sterling jewelry
and pine cone items, guests may
observe macrame and crochet in
the making, pots on the wheel,
weaving on the loom, and blank
reo being sketched into a piece
of ar
St. Joseph's Chapel, joining
the convent, will be dressed up
for a wedding. Historic photographs will be on display.
Free afternoon movies willbe
shown in St, Cecelia's Hall for
children's entertainment,
