NEVADA COUNTY'S newest waterfall has been
created inthese rocks below the spillway at the
Nevada Irrigation District's new Rollins Reservoir
on Bear River. The other view shows the reservoir, which is now filled to capacity, from the
Nevada County side looking toward the island
which seperates the Bear River and Greenhorn
Creek. The reservoir is one of four scheduled
for recreation improvements under a DavisGrunsky Act grant.
Granite Construction Wins Job Of
Repairing Damaged Highway 49
A low bid of $838,827 was
submitted June 16 by Granite
Construction Company of Watsonville for a contract to repair storm
damage at 22 locations on Highway 49 in Sierra County.
There were three other bidders,
according to state highway officials at the Marysville district
office.
W hen work is started in about

six weeks, at least one lane in
the short work areas will be kept
open for traffic at all times.
The job will take about five
working months,
December storms last year
caused serious erosion of the
highway slopes and complete loss
of the roadway in some locations,
This work will stabilize the roadbed in damaged sections,
Le The Tahoe National Forest held
their annual Basic Fire Training
School .at White Cloud campground June 23-25. The Forest
Service policy states all ablebodied male employees are
subject to fire suppression duty,
, butalsostates that no person will
be assigned to a fire position for
which he isnottrained, All
regular year-long employees and
all seasonal fire employees must
have minimum basic training
before being assigned to fire duty.
. Alltemporary project employees
and all seasonal replacements
must be given minimum basic
training within 30 days following
employment.
The purpose of the pragram is
; to provide a well-planned fire
prevention and presuppression
organization and highly trained
fire-fighting personnel. The
minimum time for Basic Fire
Training is 16 hours per man and
coversthe use of hand tools, fire
behavior, initial attack, hand
line construction, mop-up, organization and fire line safety.
It is mandatory for all Forest
Service firegoers to receive this
training.

Ed Corpe stressed Forest Service
policy, goals and safety responsibilities.
Donner
Road Bill
Delayed
A bill to include a portion of
old Highway 40 over Donner
Summit into the state's scenic
highway system has been taken
under advisement and is dead for
the current session of the legislature.
This news was announced to the
Truckee Donner ‘Chamber of
Commerce by State Senator Paul
J. Lunardi, who authored the bill.
The Truckee Donner Chamber
had urged passage of the bill
which included numerous highways throughout the state.
Under the proposed bill, SB 348,
the highway from Kingvale to
Donner State Park, including the
portion along Donner Lake and
over the summit via Soda Springs,
would have been designated as a
scenic highway.
This portion of the road has been
returned to the jurisdiction of
Nevada County because it has
been replaced by the recently
opened summit section of Interstate 80.
The Nevada County Board of
Supervisors have also backed the
move to get this portion of old
Highway 40 taken into the scenic
highway system.
The first ay 10 crews of 12-14
men were set up with crew bosses
and squad bosses selected for
each, Training was provided for
each crew in the safe use of all
common firefighting hand tools,
A special course in helicopter
operations was provided for
selected trainees.
basic safety tactics, mapreading,
compass use, smokechasing,
heavy equipment inspection,
tractor boss responsibilities and
signals, The same crews were
then assigned to simulated fires
and were required tocut fire lines
and take effective suppression
action.
On the final day selected
trainees were trained in snag falling with crosscut and chain saw
use being demonstrated, Finally
practice fires were lit and each
crew participated in actual initial
attack and suppression action.
These crews stayed with each fire
from initial attack to final mop
up to insure each fire was dead
out!

organization and equipment

low-income or idle Nevada,
Amador, El Dorado, or Placer
County farm land is being encouraged by a Farmers Home
Administration supervised credit
program to develop farm-based
recreation enterprises.
Darrel G. Zerger, County Supervisor with offices at 915
Lincoln Way, Room 5, Aubum,
this week listed the many types
of recreation enterprises financed
by FHA loans in rural areas.
Nevada, Amador, E1 Dorado,
and Placer County farmers may
apply for loans to finance recre~ /
ational enterprises such as pon
and lakes for boating and fishi
docks, vacation farms, ri¢ ng
stables, nature trails, picnic
grounds, travel-trailer ae and
shooting preserves,
"Farmers Home Admiglistration
is using its farm opetating and
farm ownership loan programs for
financing recreation loans,” Mr.

National Forest last week the

awarded the Wet Ravine Unit
County Taxes Last covering 10,070 M board feet of
Year Topped The
timber on the Downieville District, The minimum bid’‘on this
$3.4 Million Mark sale covering 1320 acres, was
$221,596.00.
On June 29, Sierra Mountain
Mills was successful bidder on
1060 M board feet of timber in
Total property taxes in Nevada
County levied by the County
government, cities, schools and
special districts reached $3,470,
172 for the year ending June 30,
1965, up 59 percent in the five
years since the $2, 182,849 for
the year ending June 30, 1960 was
levied, California Taxpayers’
Association has reported.
During this five-year period
from fiscal 1960, school district
taxes in the County increased
44,2 percent from $1, 203, 196 to
$1,734, 894,
Percapita property taxes levied
for ‘all local governments in the
County rose 24.5 percent from
$104.39 from fiscal 1960 to
$129.97 for the current year
ending June 30.
